Cobbler Aprons

October 13th, 2010

Cobbler aprons are for those who want that old-fashioned style back in theirkitchens.

Cobbler aprons are one of the more unique styles of protective clothing on the market.Although they are commonly worn in different work environments like barbershops and dentists office where a bibapron wouldn’t be conventional, their roots are actually hard to trace. While the general assumption is thatshoemakers were the first to officially sport these old fashioned aprons, no one actually knows for sure.Regardless of where they came from, even to this day, the use of cobbler aprons in a work environment is quitecommon.

The Difference Between Bib Aprons &The Rest

The cobblers apron is different from other types of bib or waist styles because itactually offers protection for the back of the body instead of just the front. On top of that, it also covers theshoulders but not the arms, and protects the whole torso although it rarely extends more than a few inches belowthe waistline. One thing that it does have in common with bib aprons is that cobbler smocks will often featurepockets along the front waist line for note pads, pens, pencils and other tools. Instead of tying around the neckand waist, these clothing items actually tie or Velcro on the sides providing full front and backprotection.

One of the most common places that the cobbler apron is seen is at the barbershop. You’lloften see barbers in these sleeveless smock covers with tools like their scissors, comb and hair clips tucked awayin the front pockets. They are also sometimes worn by optometrists, dental assistants and other medical assistantsbecause they allow them to carry small items with them while still protecting their office clothing from anychemical spills or bodily fluids that may be present in the work area.

While the cobblers apron used to be quite popular in the home during the mid twentiethcentury, they aren’t seen in domestic environments as often as they used to be. “Beansoup” however, is one companythat is looking to bring back the cobbler apron, at least for children (check out aprons for kids). They have a widevariety of washable cotton sleeveless smocks with three front pockets for storage. These kids accessories come in avariety of patterns with childrens and toddler sizes for kids 2-7 years old and are around $35 each.

Augusta Sportswear offers a variety of solid colored options like blue, red, green ormaroon for adults. They also offer a white polyester cotton blend for those who may want a more unique color likeorange or pink aprons to coordinate with their own personal tastes or their business’s color scheme. These smockscan also be personalized with fabric paint, decals or monogramming to give them a special touch.

While most people are more familiar with waist and bib aprons, sometimes a little more upperbody coverage is needed. If you find yourself in need of full protection from the waist up, then you may want toconsider looking to the past for inspiration and going out to purchase a few cobbler aprons.

LG Coaches Cook-off During Final Four Weekend Benefits Coaches vs. Cancer

April 6th, 2010

Competition Judged by Celebrity Chef Tim Love in LG Kitchen at NCAA® Final Four®

INDIANAPOLIS, April 3, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — John Calipari, head coach of the University of Kentucky’s men’s basketball team, and Mike Brey, head coach of the University of Notre Dame’s men’s basketball team, traded their playbooks for aprons here today at the LG Coaches Cook-off during NCAA® Final Four® weekend. Both coaches are appearing on behalf of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer — and showing how LG premium kitchen appliances help make both you and your kitchen stand out — the coaches brought their competitive spirit to the contest at Bracket Town™, the NCAA Final Four ultimate fan fest.

After much chopping, seasoning and sauting, Chef Tim Love, who judged the two coaches’ dishes, named Coach Brey the winner. LG Electronics, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, hosted the cooking competition and is making a $10,000 donation in both participating coaches’ names to Coaches vs. Cancer, a program that unites the American Cancer Society and the NABC in the fight against cancer.

“Coach Calapari got out of the gate fast, but with hard work and a great coach, I knew we’d come back strong,” said Brey. “I’m very proud to be the winner of today’s LG Coaches Cook-off and to take home a powerful donation to a great charity.”

The action took place in the LG Kitchen in NCAA Bracket Town Refreshed by Coca-Cola™ at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Each coach was given 45 minutes to prepare grilled lamb chops with a red wine syrup. Both coaches were supported by a student sous chef from The Chef’s Academy in Indianapolis, as they competed side-by-side in a kitchen fully equipped with four-door French Door Refrigerators, induction cooktops, double wall ovens and microwaves from LG. The coaches were judged on their creativity, presentation, and the flavor of their dish.

“My goal was to leave with all ten fingers and have fun,” said Calipari. “I did both and everyone wins with LG’s generous donation to Coaches vs. Cancer. Congrats to Coach Brey.”

Celebrity Chef Love, owner of the Lonesome Dove and the Love Shack in Texas, perhaps best known for his appearances on the CBS Early Show and Food Network’s Iron Chef, praised each of the coaches for their good humor during the competition: “Even though both coaches seem more comfortable courtside with their teams, they were great sports in the kitchen. It was a fun competition for all involved and benefited a great charity.”

In addition to the LG Coaches Cook-off, attendees at Bracket Town will be treated to a number of activities, including a “Clean Sweep” obstacle course featuring LG’s latest vacuum and laundry products and an EA Gaming tournament on INFINIA LED HDTV screens. As the Official 3-D Sponsor of the Final Four, LG also will be showing the first game of the Final Four in 3-D, providing Bracket Town fans with “something better” for their Final Four viewing experience.

“LG is thrilled to give attendees the ultimate fan experience in Bracket Town, from the 3-D game broadcast to our mobile phone NCAA experience to the snacks coming out of the LG kitchen,” said Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA. “The LG Coaches Cook-off is an opportunity for LG to give back through Coaches vs. Cancer and to provide basketball fans with a chance to see the personalities of their favorite coaches when they’re not competing on the court.”
