BARTOW – Polk County businesses that produce less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month can properly dispose/recycle it the third Wednesday of each month by appointment-only at the North Central Landfill’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The first collection day will take place Feb. 16.

Quotes will be based on the quantity and types of waste materials to be disposed/recycled. Participants must complete a registration form and inventory sheet and may need an onsite inspection prior to participating. Lake Wale fire Department given Humane Civil Severnt Award

LAKE WALES – The Lake Wales fire Department has been awarded the Humane Civil Servant Award from the Humane Society of the United States.

This award recognizes civil servants who have performed an act of significant courage or compassion to help an animal in need. According to a letter received from Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, the Lake Wales fire Department was chosen to receive this award because of its positive response to animal related rescue calls throughout the past year.

In one specific incident, Deputy fire Chief Joe Jenkins and firefighters Brittany Sweeney, Lt. Roy Wilkinson and Lt. Mike Polston helped to locate and rescue a kitten from the wall of an abandoned home.

“Had it not been for their efforts,” a city news release states, “the kitten might have died or untrained people might have been injured trying to save the kitten on their own.”

Church to hold Greek Festival

WINTER HAVEN – St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church will hold its annual Greek Festival from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 25 and 26, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 27.
