Scription: Dymo LabelManager Plug and Play – So Much Easier To Print

March 28th, 2011

If you do a lot of labeling, on object that is, this new Dymo LabelManager Plug and Play will be extremely helpful.  I love Dymo for their embossers, especially those made in the old days (this, this and this), but really hate those electronic ones with keypads on them.  they are clumsy to type, difficult to choose the right font and size without wasting a few inches of tapes.  worst of all, if you loose the manual, it will be very difficult to find out how to get that special character you knew its there inside.

this plug and play model is easy to, well no need to install, just plug in to your Mac or PC, a built-in flash memory appears as a disk on your computer where you will find the software to run.  it is that easy.  Simply start typing, changing the font as you would on your typical word processor and press print.  it uses the fonts available on your computer so you don't need to feel like being forced to accept ugly fonts from the machine.  Works great on Chinese and Hong Kong specific characters.

if you press enter during your typing, the font automatically shrink about half the size and you can do double line, triple or more within the height of the D1 tape.  one interesting feature is screen capture.  just press a button in the software and your cursor changes to crosshair for selecting part of your screen, once done the captured image will appear right on the on-screen tape and you can print right away.  Resolution is of course low and dithered, but that allows you to quickly put a company logo or small images on tapes.

It will be available at city'super soon selling at HK$680 with free gift (I heard that it will be a 2GB USB memory while stock last).  Here's the promotional video of the machine.

Plannerisms: CNN diary and notebooks by Letts

March 19th, 2011

Get ready to be impressed: here is the new line of CNN notebooks and diary from Letts!
First of all, let me say many thanks to Letts for sending me these products as samples to review. They are exquisite. and thank you especially for the personalization on the leather covers! Not only do they look exceptionally nice, having my name on them prevented my husband from pocketing them for himself! he did however stake his claim on the linen-covered notebook, which I thought was only fair.  It says a lot about these books that my husband is so interested in them! he normally doesn’t even notice notebooks and things like that.

I’ll get on with the details because there is SO much to tell you about these books.  let me just point out how cool it is that CNN has partnered with Letts to create this line of products geared towards people who travel and/ or work internationally.  Falling into that category myself, I can tell you that these products are not only very functional but also extremely useful for anyone who travels to other countries.

The CNN notebooks and diary are available at cnnlife.com.  They come in a very nice gift box, shown above. the CNN Life products include a linen-covered notebook (the CNN LifePlus), a smaller leather-bound notebook (CNN LifeStyle), and a pocket size leather-bound diary (CNN LifeLine).
First let me rave for just a minute about the leather on these books.  It is smooth and soft to the touch, and even has that nice leather smell to it. all three of these books are extremely classy and professional-looking.  They have an understated, unique look that will get attention.

First, let me take you through the CNN LifePlus notebook, which is the large linen-covered one.  (Click here for the CNN LifePlus product page.)
This book measures 15.4 cm by 21.4 cm.  the cover is flexible yet firm.  Inside the cover there is a time zones map:
Followed by a page to enter your personal information, then an annual planner that you can use for any year:
The notebook pages themselves have a unique layout.  there is blank space at the top of the page and lined space in the bottom half.  I don’t know the exact weight of the paper, but my guess is at least 80 gsm and possibly higher. the paper is thick, exceptionally smooth, and a very subtle shade of cream.
Along the edge of the right page is a dot pattern, which I’ve shown a closer view of below (and which you can click on for an even closer look):

In the top row of dots, you circle the day of the week.  In the middle row, you circle the dot indicating the month. and in the bottom row you circle the day. It’s an ingenious design to help you note the date very quickly so you can get on with your note-taking. to the right of the dots you can circle Client or Personal to classify your notes.

At the back of the book are several pages of cultural guides for doing business in various countries. I find these absolutely fascinating, and extremely accurate.
When I read the guide to US business culture (I’m from the US), I thought yep, that’s right on. when my husband read the Russia one (after having worked in Russia for 3 years) he said it’s entirely accurate. I read the India one (I lived next door in Nepal for two years awhile back) and again thought it was right on the mark.  and when I read the UK one (where I’m currently living) I thought, no wonder!  People do not realize how very different British culture is from American.  These business culture guides are extremely useful for international business travelers, and indeed could make or break the success of your business experience overseas.

In the very back of the book are references for finding CNN online (with lots of website options), on television or on your mobile so you can stay connected and informed wherever you are in the world.

Next up is the CNN LifeStyle notebook with the sumptuous black leather cover. (Click here for the CNN LifeStyle notebook product page):
This notebook measures 12.5 cm by 14.5 cm, making it very portable. this book also has the annual planner that can be used for any year:
Inside there is a section with city information for various cities around the world. there are city features and insights, information on local media, time zones and dialing codes. and here is something I find fascinating: you can use your smartphone to scan the black and white square to get a map of the city!  Wow!  very useful when you’re on the go.
The notebook pages are blank, and at the right side there is the dot design to note the date and Client/ Personal.  Again the light cream colored paper is very thick and smooth.  there is a ribbon (actual ribbon) placemarker.
At the back of the book there is the information on how to connect with CNN wherever you are.

Last but certainly not least is the CNN LifeLine pocket diary. (Click here for the CNN LifeLine diary product page.):
This also has the wonderfully smooth leather cover.  and look at that personalization! It looks so nice!!!

This diary measures 8.5 cm by 15.2 cm. It is small and slim enough to take with you absolutely everywhere so you never miss the opportunity to schedule your appointments or capture information.

Inside the front cover is the time zone map as shown above in the large LifePlus notebook.  there is a page to write in your personal information, then a two-page spread with the current year’s planner:
At the beginning of each month there is a featured city with information on airports, holidays, climate, time zones, currency and dialing codes.  and included is that digital square that can give you a city map on your smartphone!
The weekly layout is very efficient.  It consists of a week + notes format with the days on the left page and the right page lined for notes. at the bottom of the right page are reference calendars for last/ this/ next month, with the current week in bold.  the diary has a ribbon (actual ribbon) placemarker and the same light cream colored, super-smooth paper as the notebooks.
There are several blank pages in the back of the book for notes, then there is space to note your important dates:

There is a page about CNN Traveler (cnntraveler.com) which has excellent stories about locations all over the world. In the very back of the book is the information on connecting with CNN online, on tv an on your mobile as in the other CNN books.

As I said before, these books are very classy and sophisticated-looking.  They have a very professional yet cool appearance. They would make an excellent gift for any traveler, or something you should get for yourself if you are an international professional.

These books arrived just when my husband and I discovered we will soon head back into the international arena, so we appreciate them that much more. many thanks again to Letts for these excellent products!

Buckeye Technologies Inc.

February 12th, 2011

Demand for specialty wood pulp products remains strong. Buckeye Technologies Inc. (BKI – Snapshot Report) recently reported record quarterly earnings yet it remains a value stock with a forward P/E of just 13.

Buckeye manufactures specialty fibers and nonwoven materials. Headquartered in Memphis, it is the only manufacturer in the world providing cellulose-based specialty products made from both wood and cotton.

Specialty cellulose commands higher prices, in general, and demand for it is less cyclical than commodity cellulose.

It has manufacturing facilities in North America, Germany and Brazil. its products are used to manufacture many different products from rayon industrial cord, to plastics as well as thickeners for personal care products, food and drugs.

The company’s customized fibers can be found on premium letter head, currencies, personal stationary as well as automotive air and oil filters. its nonwoven materials are used in household cleaning products, wipes, table top items and food pads.

Revenue Jumped 14.3% in the Fiscal second Quarter

On Jan 25, Buckeye announced its fiscal second quarter results and saw revenue jump to $209.5 from $183.3 million in the year ago quarter primarily due to higher selling prices and improved mix. Shipment volume, however, did decline 4% as the company finished rebuilding inventories at its Foley mill and specialty cotton fibers shipments were negatively impacted by limited availability and high prices of cotton linters.

It beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 19.1% as earnings per share were a record 50 cents compared to the consensus of 42 cents. It made just 22 cents a year ago. The increase was due to higher selling prices in the specialty fibers segment and reduced interest expense.

Outlook for the second Half

Buckeye saw continued improvement both year over year and quarter over quarter. It expects the trend to continue into the second half of fiscal 2011.

The company sees demand for specialty wood pulp remaining strong and average selling prices rose 17% on Jan 1 compared to the fiscal second quarter average and were up more than 20% from last year’s prices. Fluff pulp prices also remain at high levels.

Buckeye expects nonwoven sales and earnings to improve over the seasonally weak second quarter on increased shipments and selling prices and stable fluff pulp prices.

Dividend Raised by 25%

Cash flow has improved the last few quarters. In the fiscal second quarter, long-term debt was reduced by $1 million. The company also expects to reduce long-term debt to about $100 million by the end of the fiscal year, which would be the lowest in the company’s history.

given that news, the company decided to reward the shareholders.

On Jan 25, Buckeye announced it was increasing its quarterly cash dividend to 5 cents per share from 4 cents per share due to a positive forward outlook. It had been paying the 4 cent per share dividend since August 2010.

That is a current dividend yield of 0.8%.

Zacks Consensus Estimates Jump

given the big beat in the fiscal second quarter and the improving conditions for the second half of the fiscal year, analysts scrambled to raise both fiscal 2011 and 2012 estimates.

The fiscal 2011 Zacks Consensus Estimate jumped 29 cents to $1.98 per share in the last 7 days. That is earnings growth of 124.6%.

Earnings growth is expected to continue into fiscal 2012, with earnings projected to grow another 22.2% to $2.42 per share.

Shares Are at Multi-Year Highs

Shares of Buckeye have been on a tear in the last year, rising 113% in that time. Shares are now at 5-year highs.

but even with the surging share price, Buckeye still has value.

Not only does it have the low P/E ratio which is within the value parameters at under 15, it also has a price-to-book ratio of just 1.9.

Buckeye Technologies is a Zacks #1 Rank (strong buy) stock.

Texas defies EPA, approves coal-fired plant permit

February 6th, 2011

On Wednesday January 26, 2011, 3:38 pm EST

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas environmental regulators on Wednesday approved a crucial air quality permit that paves the way for construction of a coal-fired power plant in Corpus Christi, defying a request by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to deny the permit.

The three-person Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted 2-0 to approve the permit for the planned Las Brisas Energy Center, with a few minor modifications. Commissioner Carlos Rubinstein abstained from voting due to being briefed on the permit when he previously served as deputy executive director.

The permit’s approval marked the latest chapter in a feud between the state commission and the EPA. The EPA has taken over parts of Texas’ permitting authority because the state refused to comply with federal demands, and Texas filed several lawsuits challenging EPA rules, insisting they are inefficient, don’t benefit the environment and harm industry.

After about 45 minutes of testimony during Wednesday’s public hearing, TCEQ Chairman Bryan Shaw recommended granting the permit application.

“I don’t believe the merits of the facts before us would require or warrant (the state agency to remand it), based on my understanding of the rules in place,” Shaw said.

The EPA asked the Texas commission earlier this week to deny the permit application so that the two agencies could work together to resolve various issues. The federal agency wrote in the letter dated Monday that it was concerned about a lack of consultation with them and that the plant could violate federal clean air standards.

The EPA wrote that it has “strong concerns about the public health and environmental impacts” the plant would pose.

Shaw said the EPA’s letter could not be considered because it was not part of the official record of Wednesday’s proceeding so it had no impact on their decision.

A Texas administrative law panel has twice recommended that state regulators deny the permit. Wednesday’s vote was immediately denounced by several environmental groups, including those who spoke against the permit at the hearing.

“This is just another example of why Gov. (Rick) Perry’s appointed commissioners are nothing but a rubber stamp for industry,” said Jennifer Powis, the Sierra Club’s senior regional representative.

“It’s really Gov. Perry standing in the way of federal law. That’s a problem on multiple levels. you can’t have a state cherry pick which law they want to apply,” Powis said.

Texas is home to 19 coal-fired power plants, more than any other state.

The $3 billion Las Brisas project that will “provide much-needed low-cost, reliable electric power for users throughout Corpus Christi and South Texas at competitive prices,” according to the company’s website, which also touts economic and job benefits. “It will be a state-of-the-art facility utilizing highly sophisticated equipment to generate clean energy and protect the region’s environment.”

But some residents questioned the company’s positive view, expressing concern that the plant would emit high levels of toxic substances like mercury.

“Texans will not stand by while the agency that is supposed to protect our health and environment does the opposite and would allow industrial polluters to rain air toxins on the population,” Gerald Sansing, a microbiologist with the clean Economy Coalition of Corpus Christi, wrote in a statement. “This plant must not be built and we are looking to the EPA to take the next step to enforce the law.”

Opponents can appeal the decision to the TCEQ and also file a lawsuit in district court.

Although the permit is important for clearing the way to building the plant, other permits are still needed, including a water discharge permit from the state and possibly a greenhouse gas permit from EPA.

Group gives kids healthful snack bags in Birmingham area schools

December 28th, 2010

Published: Thursday, December 16, 2010, 5:30 AM

For many Glen Iris Elementary students, the bags of snacks handed out Wednesday by volunteers from Canterbury United Methodist Church are just a little holiday treat.

But for some, the goodie bags will fill a desperate need for healthy food during the two weeks that school is closed, a stretch when they won’t get two square meals provided free or cheaply at school. That gap inspired a group of volunteers from the Mountain Brook church to fill and hand out more than 1,300 of the small brown paper tote bags.

“It really had not dawned on us that these kids were facing this,” said Susan Bellows, a church member from Vestavia Hills who organized the snack giveaway. “I guess we were thinking that somebody took up the slack somewhere, but that’s not so, so if we can help a little bit, that’s great.”

The project started early this summer after Bellows read an article about kids who receive free and reduced lunches in the public schools going hungry during summer break. she and three friends from Bible study started packing up about 20 bags a week that were doled out to individual kids through Canterbury and East Lake United Methodist.

at Thanksgiving, the group assembled 200 bags to get kids through the four-day weekend. For Christmas, they got more ambitious and aimed for 1,000 bags; they exceeded their goal and hit 1,350.

The bags will help alleviate pressure on some of Birmingham’s poor families, who are already struggling with the cost of heating bills and the scarcity of hourly work during the holidays, said George Thompson, faith and community coordinator for Greater Birmingham Ministries.

“This time of year as children are out of schools, the additional burden of feeding families at home during the holidays is additional stress to already tight budgets,” Thompson said.

Stuck in that bind, many low-income parents turn to the cheapest, most convenient food possible, which is often unhealthy, he said.

So the bags are filled with nourishing options such as peanut butter crackers, applesauce, Goldfish, single-sized boxes of cereal, raisins and granola bars. (Bellows said they’d like to include fresh fruit but can’t because the bags are prepared ahead of time.) each bag contains two of everything so kids can share with siblings or stretch out their stash over the break. There are a few treats, too, including pudding, fruit snacks, cookies and candy canes.

“We try throughout the year to talk to the kids about healthy nutrition and what they eat,” said Glen Iris Principal Michael Wilson. “This gives them an opportunity to actually see and have the healthy snacks in their hands for the two weeks that they’re off.”

About 200 of the bags went to Princeton Elementary earlier in the week, and on Wednesday the church delivered about 900 to Glen Iris; the remainder will be distributed to smaller after-school and church programs.

For more than 30 minutes, volunteers hauled in boxes and carts of the bags, which stretched across the stage of the school’s gymnasium. then, one class at a time, the students filed in to pick them up. The youngest children got their bags on Wednesday and older classes were expected to receive them today, the day before winter break begins.

“It’s heavy!” more than one kindergartner squealed as the students peeked into the bags and gave hugs to the volunteers who delivered them. “Mmmmm, thank you!”

Hello Cupcake- Custom Invitations, Stationery and Cards: Dun Dun …

November 10th, 2010

Happy Halloween!

Errr…well, yesterday anyway.

This year for Halloween, I decided I would make all of our costumes. Knowing that one of the small joys in life is seeing an animal dressed up as another animal I thought it fitting that Ginger and family go as a “school of sharks”.
I would love to offer a tutorial for this but in my usual fashion; I didn’t follow a guide, pattern or plan. I just made it up as I went along and there was a lot of pull and sew, and turn it inside out and sew, and line up here and sew. Crazy process does not = fun project for others to try and follow. Sorry.
A few tips in case you want to give it a whirl next year:
- I used around 2 yards of the gray and 1 yard of the red fabric (it’s a jersey material like a sweatshirt)
- I used white felt for the teeth
- Button eyes
- I made the head first then attached to the body
- I modified a dress pattern for my shark body
- Ginger’s shark body is basically a cape with a fit between her front paws to keep it in place
- I used recycled cardboard for the fin

The best part about all of this is that Ginger and I entered into a costume contest and won! It was a contest for the local animal shelter in partnership with the Kimpton line of hotels. There were around 30 dogs that entered the contest. We won “scariest” or “most likely to make your hair stand on end” if you want to be exact. We won a two night stay to a Kimpton Hotel and $100 to a restaurant. Amazing!!!!

FYI: My original goal was to make a costume for Christoph, Ginger and myself but I ended up quitting early and only making the head for Christoph’s costume. C’est la vie. And a little known fact. Our beta fish is named “Shark Week”.

Stamp Ink Diva: Simple Scrapbook Sketch

May 15th, 2010

In honor of May, Scrapbook Month, I’ve decided to post different scrapbook sketches. This is an idea that I found from the Simple Scrapbook Magazine.

Most people have a difficult time with scrapbook because its a larger canvas and feel like they need to add lots of embellishments to the page but I feel that some of the best pages are when you keep it SIMPLE.

I was able to create this page in minutes using My Digital Studio. It was very easy to download my pictures onto this layout and then with a few clicks, choose the paper that I wanted and add my text.

For a double page layout, I would just horizontally flip this sketch around and add my other four pictures. Start off simple and as you go, you can add more embellishments!

Hope you enjoy!

Kelty Kids Backpack – For the Child in You!

April 13th, 2010

Kids and education drive parents crazy. The worst happens when both become too much to carry. Old school bags stuffed to the brim with PT shorts and uniforms are things of the past. With the changing of the generation and mode of education, the “Must Carry list” of every kid to school or any event has also undergone a sea of change. With the increasing focus on extra circular activities in the educational system and child developmental organizations the need of a good Kelty kids backpack has taken a front seat.

Different types of back packs exist in the market and they are available for different occasions and purposes. One tends to aim for the perfect balance between the cost and the utility during such purchases. Obviously price rules but one must also pay attention to the quality and design. Most of the Kelty kids backpack available in the market has more than one feature. Back packs seem to have the ability to carry everything and anything under the sun and one tends to land up buying something that can carry everything that is not needed. You don’t need to buy a bag that can carry 10 laptops for a camping trip.

The reason behind this is simple psychology. People tend to have a “just in case” mindset, especially when buying backpacks. Remember the last time you packed for a trek, you packed as if you are never going to return and you end up packing half your house. This is exactly what you pass on to your kids when you pack their back packs for their first day to school. Nothing changes after that, the action forms a mindset which translates into a habit and before you know it, your kid is packing half his room for a day trip to the zoo.

The key is to do determine the exact usage of a Kelty kids backpack. If it is for a daily bag to school then it should not carry anything other than the books required and a lunch box. Water bottle can be hand carried. On the other hand, anything that you pack for a trek should include two pairs of clothing with a backup for the wet ones and a space for some dry food and water bottle. Medicines and some navigational and protective tools must also be inserted into the bag. More the merrier is certainly not the mantra here.

These days various forms of Kelty kids backpack are available but remember the caution: Pen down to the specific use and see the price. It really isn’t worth it to invest a huge amount for something that you will use for one trip per year.
