When it comes to crafting, Martha Stewart doesn’t mess around. She takes sewing and other fabric crafts seriously. If her magazine, television show and Web site didn’t clue you in, her new Encyclopedia of Sewing and Fabric Crafts will.
The substantial book isn’t called an encyclopedia for nothing. It’s loaded with facts, techniques and instructions for sewing, appliqué, embroidery, quilting, dyeing and printing. It comes in at 400 pages.
Stewart covers everything from the basics of sewing and choosing a sewing machine to decorating techniques and how to set up a crafting space for sewing projects. She offers step-by-step instructions for each technique and lots of photos.
Then there are the projects, 150 of them. The tome features pillows and table linens galore, as well as books, wall hangings, clothing and stuffed animals.
Although some of the projects, including a quilted crib bumper and a flower-appliqued shirt, are quite obviously not designed for the beginner, she includes plenty for the novice.
A napkin pillow cover, strawberry pincushions and stamped napkins don’t require too much courage to try. Several projects are no-sew.
Ever the animal lover, Stewart even has a section devoted to projects for pets, including instructions for hand-sewn clothes, toys and beds.
