Flog It's biggest fan finds fame, fortune and favourite celeb

June 9th, 2010

Hundreds of people turned out to watch Flog It film its antqiues show in Derby – including Joan Roberts, mum of Derby Telegraph feature writer Wendy.

SHE spent ages rummaging round her attic to find something that remotely resembled an heirloom.

So when my mum uncovered a couple of hidden treasures it delivered a double delight – the chance to make her TV debut and meet her favourite man, Flog It presenter Paul Martin.

My lovely mother has to be Paul’s biggest fan and hardly misses an episode of the BBC antiques show.

Being able to meet her TV celebrity, take part in the auction and sell some of her unwanted stuff could not have excited her more.

“Flog It has to be one of my favourite things on the telly,” she said. “I love any programmes involving auctions but this one is definitely the best.

“I enjoy watching people bringing in bits and pieces that for one reason or another they are happy to let go.

“I like the idea of appearing on the show. That’s why I decided to dig out my stuff and take it along.

“I don’t suppose I thought I would be in with a chance of taking part but I was happy to see what was going on and have my items valued.”

With her 9ct gold chain and bracelet, a Cameo brooch and her grandad’s silver-topped ash wood walking stick, my 62-year-old mum turned up for the valuation and filming session in Ashbourne.

Reflections on Operation Dragoon

April 18th, 2010

On August 15th 1944, just two months after the Allied landings in Normandy, the combined forces of the United States, Great Britain and Free French launched another amphibious operation. Code named Dragoon, the Allied forces would establish a beachhead in the area of St. Tropez between the cities of Toulon and Cannes in Southern France. The objective of the landings would be to seize control of the French port located at Marseille then link up with the Allied forces fighting to the north.

As fighting continued in Normandy, it became obvious to Allied leaders that additional port facilities were needed as the ports at Le Havre and Cherbourg were at maximum capacity. Planning for Dragoon (originally called Anvil) was taking place simultaneously with the planning for Overlord (Normandy landings) and at one point President Roosevelt even suggested that Dragoon precede Overlord by a month. This became a very divisive topic between the Americans and the British as Churchill didn’t like the thought of the transferring of men and equipment from the Italian front to France or the allocation of any resources or focus away from Overlord and really saw no strategic military need for an attack in this region. In the end, both sides would reach an agreement and Dragoon would follow Overlord.

The United States 7th Army was given the task of breaching Hitler’s Atlantic Wall in Southern France with three US divisions (the 3rd, 45th and 36th) of the US VI Corps under Maj. Gen. Lucian Truscott leading the way at three beaches, designated Alpha, Delta, and Camel. The 1st Airborne Task Force was to commence with their drops at dawn. The Allied forces consisted of approximately two thousand transports and landing craft escorted by nearly three hundred warships including American battleships Nevada, Texas, and Oklahoma and the British Ramillies which also provided support for the Normandy landings. Also included in this armada were approximately one hundred and fifty-one thousand troops. Defending the beachhead was the German 19th Army under the command of General Friedrich Wiese with seven underequipped and under-strength infantry divisions. He did, however, have at his disposal the 11th Panzer Division and a division of Gebirgsjäger (mountain troops) which were at almost full strength.

As with the landings in Normandy, a tremendous naval and air bombardment preceded the invasion. The site of the big beasts pumping their shells over the landing craft was a site to see. The main units began to land on the beach by approximately 8AM. Flanked by paratroopers and French commandos, and supported by armor, the assault waves were able to get ashore virtually unscathed. By the end of the day, almost ninety-four thousand troops had landed with a loss of just one hundred and eighty-three men. Operation Dragoon was a success and gave Eisenhower and the Allies a secure southern flank in France and eased the pressure as many months of bloodshed were to come until the German capitulation in May 1945.

The German Army now had more Allied troops to contend with in the west. It must be stated that the invasion of Southern France is often overshadowed by the Invasion of Normandy but to the veterans that fought in this campaign there was no difference. At the time, there was disagreement as to whether or not this campaign was necessary. However, it cannot be argued that the men coming ashore on August 15th 1944 would, just like their Overlord counterparts, play a vital and necessary role in the defeat of Nazi Germany.
