“I have some jewelry here and I’m not sure if it’s worth anything,” she said.

After a few minutes of silence as he examined the items with a loupe, Doug Durow gave his appraisal.

“This is 10-karat and this is 14-karat and I’m coming up with $250,” said Durow, a gemologist who manages the new Jensen Estate Buyers, LLC in downtown Hudsonville.

“I’ll take it,” said Doughty, 44, who wanted cash to help pay any upcoming medical bills. Her husband lost his job and now must wait six weeks for health insurance from his new employer, she said.

“We’re really hoping to try to get something for a cushion. I’ve kept the stuff that’s important to me, but the other stuff I’m not wearing.”

Jensen Jewelers bought the building next door, formerly occupied by a home entertainment retailer, and started the secondhand store.

The shop seeks vintage jewelry, pocket watches and the like, but also deals in antiques, furniture, coins and collectibles.

Dan Jensen, a Jamestown Township trustee who has owned the jewelry shop at 3473 Kelly St. for 14 years, opened the neighboring store to get into a surging resale market.

“It’s like a jewelry version of ‘Antiques Roadshow’ has come to Hudsonville,” he said. “With the economy being tough, people are looking to sell things. Everybody’s buying gold. Some people are buying silver. But nobody’s buying anything else.”

Among the items in the store last week: a 19th-century spinning wheel, an old clock, a Rolex watch, two 100-ounce bars of silver and some M.I. Hummel figurines.

“That came out of an old barn,” Durow said, pointing to a 1980s Herman Miller Eames chair made of rosewood. “With the economy the way it is right now, people are selling stuff left and right.

“We’ve been doing a little bit of everything. It’s amazing what people bring in.”
