Lions money help with eyeglasses for kids, seniors
The Douglas Lions Club has received a grant from WalMart for the community for its seventh straight year.
The Lions club received a check for $1,000 from Walmart to give back to the community. “Everything we make we give back to the community,” Lions Club Project Chairman, Frank Vasquez, said.
The grant money goes towards helping children and senior citizens with free eye glasses and eye exams. Dr. Charles Roberts is the optometrist that sees the patients for the Lions Club.
“We pay for $130 towards eye glasses and eye exams for each person,” Vasquez said. “We help people who don’t have money or don’t have a job to pay for it or if they don’t have insurance.”
This is the first year some of the grant money from WalMart is going to local churches as well. The grant application has added a faith based donation section and the Lions Club took the opportunity to give back to St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
The churches had to be non-profit organizations. They each received a $500 check to go towards helping assist the poor and needy with food, electricity bills, clothing and more.
The churches assist families every week and the money will help to continue assisting them. Father Gilbert Malu received the checks on behalf of the churches.
