ANAHEIM – Hall of Famer Rod Carew has seen it all. He has probably met more fans, taken more photos and signed more autographs than he has logged hits (3,053), RBI (1,015), at-bats (9,315) and games (2,469) from his 19 major league seasons.

So Carew, 66, didn’t flinch on a chilly Sunday morning when a toddler, at his eager Angel fan father’s urging, rolled a baseball onto the table for him to sign in front of the Team Store at Angel Stadium.

Carew, who played for the Angels from 1979 to 1985, quickly worked through the scribbles with his Sharpies and Bic ballpoints on a baseball-season-worth of Rawlings balls, glossy 8x10s, a June 13, 1983 “Sports Illustrated” on which he made the cover and even a ticket stub from his Aug. 4, 1985 Angels game against his former Minnesota Twins when he landed his 3,000th hit.

Between handshakes and brief exchanges of pleasantries with fans, the best contact hitter in baseball history hurried to put his name on his bobblehead, his Starting Lineup figurine, a miniature football and even a white, leather pair of Twins sneakers.

But Carew stopped, pen frozen and sunglasses-covered eyes up, when one fan brought him an autograph: his own — on a piece of scrap paper from Keno’s Restaurant in Anaheim Hills.

Carew immediately rose from the table and embraced Edilma Otero, a sweet Colombian woman with short black hair, wire-framed glasses and a bright red Angels turtleneck. she had framed that autograph that Carew signed for her 13 years ago.

Otero, of Corona, had been a waitress at Keno’s, where Carew was a regular during his years as an Angels All-Star first baseman (1979-85) and coach (1992-1999) and former Anaheim Hills resident.

“He came in all the time and ordered the same thing every day: a short stack of pancakes and coffee,” recalled Otero. “Sometimes, he’d bring his children. Sometimes, he’d be there while getting his car washed. all the time, he was very nice to me.”

Coaching opportunities and life changes led Carew to move from Anaheim Hills. Before he left, Otero asked Carew for an autograph that wasn’t on the check.

“I wanted it for my son, Luis Daniel, who was just six months old,” said Otero, who got a piece of restaurant stationery for Carew to sign:

Otero framed it above a tiny collage of Carew’s baseball card and placed it on a shelf that would become home to her son’s baseball trophies.

“I just saw Rod Carew this morning and he asked me to wait so we could talk more after he signs the autographs,” said Otero, who waited patiently for two hours as Carew signed more than 500 autographs at the free holiday signing.

When Carew finished, he turned to Otero, who introduced him to her son. He is a 13-year-old baseball player and fan in an Angels red ballcap and jacket who had waited all his life to meet Carew.

Carew took photos with Otero and her family. He signed several baseballs for her while trading stories in Spanish, smiles and laughter.

Their emotional reunion had lasted about five minutes on a morning Carew thought he had seen it all.
