BOWIE, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–SHOPPERS® Food & Pharmacy encourages healthy eating in 2012 with the expansion of its exclusive in-store nutritional navigation program, “nutrition iQ®,” to include the fresh food departments. The expanded program —which also includes robust nutrition information for the center store —features additional signage, nutritional attributes and health benefit information, offering consumers an enhanced solution for identifying better-for-you foods.

“The expansion of the nutrition iQ program coincides with the new year, the perfect time to get on track and eat better-for-you foods as well as to create a healthy lifestyle.”

“At SHOPPERS, we strive to make healthy eating convenient and enjoyable,” said SHOPPERS registered dietitian Jennifer Shea. “The expansion of the nutrition iQ program coincides with the new year, the perfect time to get on track and eat better-for-you foods as well as to create a healthy lifestyle.” Shea suggests that shoppers use the nutrition iQ® program to help them stay on top of these 2012 snacking trends:

  • Eat More often throughout The Day, but in Small Amounts: Get in the habit of doing this to help keep the pounds at bay, as long as you keep your calories in check! Not skipping meals and eating every few hours helps keep your metabolism going strong, which helps burn calories. Plus you’ll never feel overly hungry, so are less likely to overeat. Just make sure those mini meals or snacks are nutrient packed and include some fiber and protein, both which are satisfying and help keep you full longer. Focus on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans, lean protein, low-fat dairy and fish. and drink water throughout the day, jazzed up with orange or lime slices.
  • Be on The Lookout for new Snacks: Keep your eye out for new snack foods hitting the marketplace, such as lentil or edamame hummus, different nut varieties and trail mixes, new kid-friendly produce snacks and gluten-free snacks. look for the SHOPPERS nutrition iQ® tags and signs to help guide you to better-for-you snacks.

Developed in collaboration with Joslin Clinic, part of an academic medical center affiliated with Harvard Medical School, nutrition iQ® uses color-coded shelf tags and signs on more than 3,200 food items throughout the store.

Best Bay Area carpet cleaners

March 10th, 2011

You’ve heard the expression, “So clean you could eat off of it.” but sometimes carpets and rugs start to look like someone has been eating off them. whether it’s wine stains or just overall dinginess, a good cleaning can make carpets and rugs look like new – and even improve indoor air quality.

Those in the market for a carpet or rug cleaning have a lot of good choices, according to Bay Area Consumers’ Checkbook and Checkbook.org. Checkbook collected ratings from thousands of area consumers, and 32 of the 64 rated firms received Checkbook’s recommendation for quality. but it still pays to be careful; there were big firm-to-firm differences in ratings: the top-rated firms were more than twice as likely as the lowest rated ones to be rated “superior” on “doing work properly” by their surveyed customers.

Different firms may recommend different methods; shampooing and hot-water extraction are two of the most common. if your carpet is lightly soiled, the choice isn’t so important. but for badly soiled carpets, you’re best off choosing a firm that offers hot water extraction with truck-mounted equipment or a combination of shampoo and hot water extraction.

Checkbook’s researchers found that the majority of firms will quote the price for most jobs over the phone. if you can’t get quotes by phone, request in-home estimates. Price shopping is well worth the effort. Checkbook found big differences.

For one specific job, cleaning a living room, dining room and hallway (a total of 330 square feet), prices ranged from $80 to $198.

For another job, cleaning a 460-square-foot area consisting of a living room, dining room, hallway and one bedroom, prices ranged from $100 to $276.

When you shop by phone, don’t let firms quote by the “room.” an L-shaped room, for example, might be one room to you but two rooms to them. Get quotes based on square feet.

Don’t overpay for soil retardants, deodorizers or other add-ons. With some firms, these cost little or nothing; with others, they can double your costs. Very likely you will get no benefit for your money.

Once you decide on a firm, be sure to communicate clearly what cleaning method you want and which, if any, add-ons you do want. also, make sure to get a written estimate and a written workmanship guarantee promising that the firm will at least redo the job if you consider it unsatisfactory. Checkbook also has this advice for getting the work done right:

– before the cleaner(s) arrive, move antiques and other prized valuables out of the way, and vacuum the area.

– Point out stains and explain what caused them and how long they’ve been there.

– Warn the firm about furniture with weak legs, possible weak carpet seams and other trouble areas.

– be sure plastic or foil shields are placed under all furniture legs when the work is complete.

– Don’t pay until you’ve walked around the carpet and inspected it. there is no reason not to walk on the carpet as soon as the job is completed.

Electrolux Annual Report Named Winner in the Nasdaq OMX Nordic Competition

December 22nd, 2010

STOCKHOLM, Sweden–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Electrolux Annual Report for 2009 was selected winner in the Nasdaq OMX Nordics annual competition, comparing the annual reports from all companies listed on the exchange in Stockholm.

according to the jury, Electrolux was selected because of the informative way in which Electrolux presents its operations. The jury also praised the report’s two-part format, where the first part describes the operations and strategy and the second part contains the earnings review, the sustainability report and the corporate governance section. The jury felt that Electrolux in this way succeeds to give individual investors the information they might need to make an investment decision, while the more formal part of the annual report gives shareholders and other stakeholders access to more in-depth information on the company.

From the jury statement:

”On the whole, Electrolux succeeds in presenting a very good picture of the company’s strategic changes in recent years and how the company sees the future challenges. The latter comprises everything from developing products that consumers are willing to pay a premium for to how challenges in the climate dilemma should be tackled. All in all, Electrolux has produced a very readable, compelling and understandable annual report. The layout is good-looking, and there is a very good relationship between the text, tables and diagrams that sets an example to all listed companies with ambitions in this area.”

The competition included all listed firms on Nasdaq OMX Nordic in Stockholm, where the Electrolux share this year celebrates its 80-year listing.

Previously this autumn, the Electrolux Annual Report 2009 was selected as the best annual report in the world in “Annual Report on Annual Reports” by Report Watch, which is considered the most comprehensive and international ranking of this type. this was the third consecutive year that Report Watch ranked the Electrolux Annual Report among the very best in the world.

Electrolux is a global leader in household appliances and appliances for professional use, selling more than 40 million products to customers in more than 150 markets every year. Jim Hillibish: HD radio best thing you'll hear on your stereo

March 11th, 2010

HD radio is off the endangered-species list but still takes patience. It’s worth the effort. it powers radio right off the quality meter, rejuvenating an ancient medium.

The system is confused with satellite radio. There are no monthly fees. the radios can be costly, $200 or more. Sony has rolled out an excellent tuner as a component of your stereo system. It’s only $79 and is a ground-breaker for consumers.

Few listeners know about HD, and fewer still do not realize that HD does not stand for “high definition.” it means hybrid digital, the process of digitizing radio signals. This does the same for radio listening quality as CDs did for records. in fact, users will tell you it’s even better than CDs.

The downsides are you must buy an HD radio, signal strengths can be weak, and local HD stations are few. If you cannot get Public Radio, you may not find anything worth listening to.

Station owners in 2002 hoped by ignoring HD, it would go away. They thought the same of free Internet Radio that appeared at about the same time, then the pay satellite radio.

The broadcasters are wrong, and they’ve seen their audiences shrink as the new technology evolves, especially their coveted younger listeners. Public Radio has no commercial inhibitions.

The FCC on Jan. 29 approved increased HD signal power. up to that time, HD was limited to 80 percent of a broadcaster’s analog signal, making reception problematic.

If you can get it, you will find that HD’s sound is high bandwidth. it is silent between songs with none of the usual radio hisses, pops, static and dropped signals. Unlike common radio, music has texture and feeling.

It’s a must for hard-to-please audiophiles. This may be the best sound you can pump through your stereo.

An added attraction is you need no DJ-patter to announce songs. Song titles stream on the LCD screen on each radio.

The Sony XDRF tuner lists at $100 and is discounted to $79 on amazon.com, free shipping. Before you buy a radio, make sure the seller has a liberal return policy. the broadcast service is free.

I got the Sony for Christmas. it took 10 seconds to plug it to the Aux input jack of my Bose system. (You’ll need to buy the cables if you do not have them. Sony does not make this easy.)

I spent a few more seconds stringing the dipole wire antenna. I powered up and pressed Scan HD. the first and best stations I found were classical and folk-music channels — no surprise.

Sony includes a remote control, primarily for tuning.

The improvement over FM-stereo was remarkable. the music sounded alive. Banjo and piano are the most difficult instruments to broadcast. They came in perfectly.

Be aware it takes up to five seconds to link to stations. This dead air is confusing at first.

If signals are weak, they will come in as standard AM or FM. Purchasing a signal-boosting antenna (less than $30) might help.

For a list of local HD stations, Google “HD stations” and your town’s name.

More HD radios are in the pipeline. Some models transmit music titles for saving on your iPod. it makes purchasing songs easy.

Ford offers an HD radio option on its Synch systems. the Microsoft Zune music player is rolling out HD radio on its media player.

As with all component add-ons, the quality still is dependent on your amplifier and speakers. Try it. Radio has never sounded this good.
