Comics And…Other Imaginary Tales: Wonder Woman #600 — A Review

July 27th, 2010

I’ve always loved the character of Wonder Woman, mostly stemming from the old TV show. So, it’s appropriate that this issue begins with a text piece from Lynda Carter. She really has a great understanding of Princess Diana, even though she only played her for three seasons. It’s a shame that we’re living in the post-secret identity era, because I really miss Carter’s Diana Prince portrayal. They tried to resurrect it with the latest relaunch a few years back, but it failed miserably. Despite the “goddess within us all” new age philosophy, the majority of the essay was very good.

There are nine pin-up pages throughout the issue. The first one is by Adam Hughes and shows Wonder Woman holding an Elephant at the circus with some boys and girls scattered around. The facial expressions on the little girls is particularly delightful, because seeing her makes them proud of their own “girl-power”. The boys on the other hand are simply dumbstruck. It’s a beautiful picture, especially with the soft colors. However, the placement of the elephant’s trunk and the way Diana is gazing at it is a little untoward, slightly marring this otherwise innocent picture.

For me the seven-page Gail Simone/George Perez story was the highlight of the issue. Wonder Woman is leading the charge with what looks to be every female super-hero in the current earthbound DCU. They’re fighting Ivo’s Cyber-Sirens (attractive blue women robots), who can turn men into obedient puppy dogs. Skyrocket from the Power Company (I always like to see her character), sums it up best, “Pretty girls making guys act dumb. It’s just like high school all over again.” The Sirens are besieging the White House. Batwoman makes a strange comment that she “can’t believe [she’s] saving the guys who protect the guy [she] voted against!” Who is the President of the U.S.A. in the DCU? I don’t know, but somehow I doubt this was a swipe against President Obama. Anyway, the women save the day in spectacular fashion. However, Wonder Woman doesn’t have time to have beers with Batwoman or be personally thanked by the President, so she quickly departs.

Another great thing about this short story is the balance between Wonder Woman the super-hero and Diana the person. So at the end of the fifth page, we see WW spin into her civilian dress as she’s landing. She’s arrived just in time to find a seat, before Vanessa Kapatelis gives her valedictorian address. Vanessa is from Perez’s post-crisis reboot and in her speech she mentions some of the ideals and values she learned from Diana. The two spend some time walking and talking after the ceremony and set to right some issues they’ve had in the past. It seems a fitting capstone to what Perez started nearly 25 years ago, but I’m not sure what it has to do with what Simone had been doing recently.

The next pin-up is by Nicola Scott and colored by Jason Wright. This is my favorite one of the nine. Wonder Woman stands atop a column on Paradise Island with her arm bracelets crossed. In the background you can see part of the island, the wide sea, and expansive sky. Her face is pretty, her arms strong, and her figure seems to be reasonably proportioned. The colors are spectacular. The lasso glows, the metal on her costume gleams in the sunlight, and her skin tone is appropriately Mediterranean in color. The next pin-up is by Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert, and Rod Reis. It’s nice too, but Wonder Woman’s smile doesn’t seem to fit the scene of her just beheading a Medusa.

The second story is an excellent five-page tale by Amanda Conner, which co-stars Power Girl. So, those of you lamenting the loss of Conner from PG’s series may want to pick up the issue for this tale alone. It takes place sometime “a while back”. After Wonder Woman, Power Girl, and the full-mask Batgirl defeat Egg Fu, Power Girl asks Diana for some relationship advice. I don’t want to give away too many details, but it’s VERY funny.

The figure position of the Guillem March pin-up seems to be something that Jim and Lee would comment about during one of their previews. Also, the left arm, deflecting bullets, is shown in three positions and it just doesn’t quite work. The Greg Horn pin-up is next and it’s about what you’d expect. The Francis Manapul pin-up, colored by Brian Buccellato, is stellar. The Flash artist (who is still knocking it out of the park every month in that book) has really captured Wonder Woman’s determination as she leads a band of Amazons through the jungles on Themyscira. Her headband is slightly larger, which fits the warrior scene. The seventh pin-up is by Phil Jimenez and colored by Hi-Fi. It’s an awesome two-page montage of various scenes and characters from the series.

The third story is a seven-pager by Louise Simonson and Eduardo Pansica (with Bob Wiacek as inker). Wonder Woman fights alongside Superman against Nikos Aegeus, “a terrorist organization of one”. He flies around on a black winged horse and shoots stolen Zeus lightning bolts at the heroes. The story and art were okay, but not very memorable. It seemed a little like filler to me.

The eighth pin-up is by Jock and it is downright disturbing. The face is very unflattering and the eyes and lips look particularly harsh. The stance is totally ridiculous. It’s just creepy. I don’t know why this was approved for the book (Why no Brian Bolland pin-up?). I’d rip it out, but the patriotic Shane Davis (with Jamie Mendoza and Nei Ruffino) pin-up on the back is pretty nice.

The fourth story is six-page tale by Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins. I really enjoyed Kolins’ work when he did the Flash, but then his style changed and I didn’t like it as much. This seems like another evolution to his style and it reminded me of Bruce Timm’s Justice League Wonder Woman (the best portrayal of Wonder Woman since Lynda Carter). So, I thought it was very good. However, part of me feels that these pages were included just so they could put Johns’ name on the cover credits. Diana is fighting some thugs (well-dressed thugs), when she hears a cry for help. The men are chasing a young girl in a white dress. When she catches up to the girl, her hand passes right though her. It’s Diana when she was a child. The girl runs toward a dazzling light and Wonder Woman follows her. We don’t know who the narrators are (maybe the DC editorial staff), but essentially they feel that “Diana is far too undervalued by this world.” Diana starts to disappear into the light and the next page begins the prologue of JMS’s storyline.

Okay, perhaps this is the part you really wanted to read about. I’ll admit that hoping to get in on the ground floor of a new and improved WW storyline was a big draw about this issue. The execution of the ten-page story was good and I loved the art by Don Kramer and Michael Babinski, which was colored by Alex Sinclair. The action, pacing, and dialogue were fine. However, it’s the underlining concepts that are troublesome.

As the story opens we have Wonder Woman in her new costume (more on that later) racing down an alleyway. She comes up against seven guys with guns, wearing business suits. She jumps (not sure she can fly anymore) at them and starts taking them down, leaving a “W” mark on one guy’s forehead after back-handing (actually back-forearming) him with her new bracelet. As she starts to question one of them a command is given to blow the team up. She escapes the blast by jumping to a nearby fire escape and heads for the rooftops.

The next scene has her in a storm sewer lined with motionless robed and hooded figures, which question why she has gone “outside” before her training was complete. Diana ignores their advice to stay put and leaves again to see the Oracle. The blind Oracle (with a nose ring, leather jacket, fishnets, and Ankh neckband) is sitting beneath a through-truss bridge along a lined concrete channel – a very dirty, run down channel with old shopping carts, graffiti, and trash. Diana feels lost and the Oracle tries to explain why.

“What you have to understand is that the world you see isn’t always the world that is, or has been. In the world that I see you have always been exactly as you are right now. And you have never been anything like what you are right now. Just as I was not always what I am now.”

Apparently, Diana was taken to this underground “hole” 18 years ago as an infant after her mother was murdered. The men responsible are being manipulated by some sinister higher power. The Oracle decides that the best way to help Diana understand is to mentally show her the ruins of Paradise Island.

Now, back to the concepts. Thanks to the changes in the timestream, Wonder Woman can’t even enter a bar anymore, because she’s not even 21! She’s probably the same age as Wonder Girl and younger than Donna Troy (if these characters still exist)! She GREW UP in a SEWER! That’s horrible, even if the timeline gets repaired. Maybe that’s the worst part, we have this bold new direction and the reset button is already in place. This looks like JMS’s pitch for the Earth One graphic novels that they just folded into the regular series. How will this temporary odyssey really relate once Wonder Woman gets back to normal? Wasn’t the Wednesday Comics WW story from a year ago about her dreaming about rediscovering herself? I don’t see this as an improvement, but I’m still interested in how it might play out.

There is a two-page text piece by JMS and Jim Lee (who redesigned the costume) about the new outfit. THIS was the best they could come up with? It seems like a total retread of what Mike Deodato, Jr. came up with for the Contest storyline back in the mid-1990’s. You know the one with the jacket and the biker shorts. I don’t mind the new tiara and having shoulder straps to hold her in seems practical enough, but the colors are too dark. I don’t like the neckband and the bracelets are too ornate – remember how they used to represent the Amazon’s bondage, now they’re just fashionable. This wouldn’t be a terrible outfit for when she’s fighting street crime, but for this to be the regular costume all the time. No, it doesn’t work, especially since I’ve just seen throughout the issue how awesome the iconic one looks; although, my eight year-old daughter liked the new one a lot. Internet Kill Switch The Truth Obama is hiding from you.

July 2nd, 2010

According to the website “the SecDev Group
secdev.ca/opeds.php

While getting my daily C-span fix back in January I watched and live Press conference, the began with Hillary Clinton making broad generalized statements about how China is censoring its people from the freedom to learn about the world via the net. In the same breath makes statements about how she and her team has foreign policy that will fight censorship in not only china but 30 other countries as well. Her statements left me feeling like I just ripped the wrapper of my Christmas present and just when I thought the excitement couldn’t get more intense, I open the box to find some socks. Not even the cool 9volt powered heated ones that never fail to elicit a “I gota get some of those” each time you are reminded of them as you page through t the sky mall catalog.

Back to the emotional black hole Clinton just managed to create sucking every bit I had intended to tuck away so I wouldn’t need my 15 minute 4:00 power nap today. Nevertheless, before I could click the mouse were come an odd looking couple up to the plate to bat.

Up first is
Ross, Alec Senior Adviser Department of St

Next at bat is
Posner, Michael Assistant Secretary Department of State->Democracy and Human Rights

Then just as if we didn’t see it coming we will let the Press give it a shot batting in the clean up spot.

After watching this video I recall it getting stuck in my minds eye replaying it over, and over picking out the facial expressions Alec Ross keeps expressing. Watch his body language once the press starts asking questions and the resulting duck and cover as he pulls a  three stooges move where one steps back leaving the other standing to look like they  volunteered.

Watch the condescending face he makes as he start to get angry. You can see the doubt in his face as he speaks words that  he believes and others he knows to be hollow, administrative Obama drama lies.

Don’t take my word for it watch for yourself. He gets angry at one point as the reporters as not so easily talked over top of. They clue into the underlying message and its explosive undertones. Posner a slightly more seasoned speaker, still cannot quell the inflammatory statements that they are stating are our current foreign policy’s, the link for your viewing entertainment c-spanvideo.org/program/291558-1

Now skip ahead to today. Our puppet president with Lieberman close in toe are pushing for what has been named the Internet kill switch. The kill switches psychology the words are intended to invoke in you subconscious are yet another Bernays tactic that most people deny exist. I want to clear some thing sup before I drop the truth bomb on you then follow that up with a reality bomb. and if there’s anything left to the doubters we will just let them craw off so they can tell the other member of their terrorist group are funding. You her me say it, and ill explain in detail after I make you see what the intention of this Lieberman vs john q public sparing match.

Hypothetical situation results in the pres shutting off thInternetet.

This is only a small part of the total damage that would take place.

Publication: National Jeweler Date: Tuesday, May 23 2006
Study: Online sales to top $200 billion this year
Total online retail sales are on track to zoom past the
$200 billion mark this year, more than double the
$100 billion volume reached just three years ago.

2. This is just “retail” online sales there are about 14 other online revenue models
3. Think how many jobs would be last and how bad the economy would be if it we’re shut down
4. 3 letter acronym gov agencies use the web to gather intel
5. Telecoms industries utilize the network for voip which carry the majority of data
6. Understand the effects of this and how the corporation that stand to loose everything such as

eBay, Paypal, amazon, apple, YouTube, Sprint, verizon, .gov sites . org sites   Itunes, all the streaming video sites.
search engine sites, you cant even begin to imagine vast damage shutting down the internet would cause.

How about the camera infrastructure put in cities across the globe to moniter crime
Traffic cams on the highways
Meterologists weather stations
Emergenciy broadcasts
Post office
Fedex
Airline tickets
EMAIL between companies
TEXT messages on your phone is internet based.

You can its clear there is no way he coud shut down the internet.  But what they are doing is the same thing you do when you go to negociate buying a vehicle.

You walk in, look at a car.  Sales man come over and says 20K  you reply 10K, his turn 17k, your final offer 16K  deal.

Do you expect Obama to present a little non invasive procedure?  No he will go for the big huge scar producing procedure knowing the people will yell and complain.  Then he cans just take some thing of the bill (that he really didnt care about to begin with) and tell you hes making compromises so should you.  CON GAME at its finest.

Another way to see this is a distraction is the Non responsive nature all these major campaign contributing Corporations do nt seem to even pay attention to something that could be devistating to their business.   If that s  not a “tell” then I dont know what it.

Im sure the second their consituants got work of such a plan the big corps sent their best man to chat with Obama.  And I sure he told them dont worry its all a distractionary op.

Now back to the press conference you hopefully just watched.  Did you enjoy the press hitting that home run once they realised we are funding terrorists?  It ‘s all ok until the shoes on the other foot.

It is fact, the 30 foreign groups or individuals mention in the vid are being funded by  a US budget controlled by Hillary Clinton,. In their own words, they encourage individuals and groups within the foreign country that wish to develop software or hardware that will circumvent that countries ESTABLISHED LAWS. They go as far to identify china and 30 other nations we are providing the funds to support the groups . PAYING FOREIGN CRIMINALS TO Circumvent THE LAWS OF THAT COUNTRY.  If China were  to do that to us it would be an act of war and all Chinas assets woud be frozen here and no one coud have anything to do with them since they would bw a counrty that funds terrorism.

Bottom line it. WE THE USA, The land of the two faced politician that are funding groups that cause civil unrest in a foreign land are in FACT the terrorists. OUR politicians stand a wall of soldiers shoulder to shoulder while they hid behind them and throw grenades at other who are minding their own business. killing or causing damage to the innocent victim As GOD FORBID that victuals son or daughter were to pick up a grenade the politician lobbed at then from behind the American solder. GOD forbid the person be from the middle east. And GOD forbid the killing of their family member by the cowardly politicians be so much that they snap and go FU*king ape Sh*t wild trying to get to that American politician who hides under his desk shaking in his $1000 loafers, the same politician that screams help me the terrorists are trying to get me. SEE AMERICA they want to kill us, I was just sitting here under my desk when the terrorist tried to kill me. AS the media arrives on the scene the Politician give the order DEFEND THE USA FROM TERRORISTS and the soldiers drag the the victum off to be water-boarded. Ans as hes bound and shackled this person who did nothing wrong, who stood and watched the American position detestation his family, bringing any man to the point were reason and self control no longer have any control over the blood pumping anger and rage through his entire body CLICK! goes the media camera, as they broadcast a live image to the rest of the word, showing a man who had every right to act as he did, is cut to pieces by the media painting a bloody picture for the rest of the sheeple as the guzzle down another beer, and switch between the football scores and American idol.

If you think this is far fetched, think again.  The following paragraph comes from secdev.ca/opeds.php

As you read the first paragraph ask yourself why is the Iranian so irate?

Why is a convoy occupying his town?

Why are they deploying technology to perform a psyop on the innocent people of the town?

As you read further remember the video where our officials admit to
FUNDING TERRORISTS, they do it with our money.  So who gets left having to die for the lie?  Whose children are left in so much debt they are doomed for generations?  Who let it happen time and time again?

Still think the Kill switch is for us?
Its aim is to stop the JUSTIFIED counter attack provicated by the US.  But it will be portraied as a unprovicated attackon our freedom

Answer my question, WHO ARE THE TERRORISTS?

WHO IS FUNDING THE TERRORISTS?

HOW DO WE STOP FUNDING THEM?

When will we become the target of our own counrty?

We will be next. we will be fooled by the box in your living room, that shows faked imagery just like 9/11 jfalse flag, just like the Israelie fake footage of the flotilla murders.

Time after Time, the American public beats their chest and says how smart they are when they don’t even realize they march off into war, giving their lives while the true enemy hides under the desk.

Read this and you’ll see the lies being spun and the twist to try and justify the funding of the inside terror groups.

Ottawa needs a strategy for cyberwar  By Ronald Deibert and Rafal Rohozinski.

This article appeared in the National Post

Recently, the Canadian envoy to Iran was called in and admonished by Iranian officials for contributing to the destabilization of the regime because of support for social networking tools, like Twitter and Facebook. The envoy must have scratched his head in puzzlement.

The Iranians’ furor was ignited by the work of our company, Psiphon, which is based in Canada and has actively engaged in a campaign to help Iranians bypass their country’s filters and exercise basic human rights of access to information and freedom of speech. On average, one Iranian per minute has signed up to our “right-2know” nodes — customized websites pushed into Iran that contain access to BBC Persian and Radio Farda — and more than 15,000 have used our service since the crisis began.

However, we have received no support from the Canadian government — not even a note of thanks. As far as we know, the Canadian government does not even have a cyberspace strategy (of promoting access to information and freedom of speech) about which a country like Iran would be irritated. As Canadians, we wish it did.

Psiphon’s activities in Iran are not the first of their kind to generate intense media interest. Just a few months ago, a related project of ours, the Information Warfare Monitor, published a report called Tracking GhostNet that discovered a cyber-espionage system infecting government ministries and embassies in more than 103 countries. The case was splashed across the front pages of newspapers, and produced a powerful curiosity about cyber security around the world that continues unabated.

For us, the GhostNet revelations were surprising but not unexpected. Through our various research and commercial activities — the Information Warfare Monitor, the OpenNet Initiative and Psiphon — we have tracked, analyzed and, in some cases, tried to actively restrain the growing tendencies toward censorship, surveillance and militarization online.

According to the latest estimates of the OpenNet Initiative, more than 30 countries block access to some kind of information online. What is most disturbing is that many of them are increasingly doing so using a variety of subtle, indirect and flexible forms of controls: denial of service attacks against sources of information deemed strategically threatening, sometimes contracted out to criminal organizations; the use of targeted surveillance, like that which we discovered with Ghostnet; and threats and intimidation of ISPs to remove information at its source.

While much of the world’s attention is focused on Iran, Psiphon is involved in a very similar battle unfolding in a country nearby: Kyrgyzstan. Unfortunately, this crisis receives very little media scrutiny. In Kyrgyzstan, authorities have coerced ISPs to filter access to opposition websites leading up to elections in July. Working with Kyrygyz media and civil society, we have set up right-2know nodes and are pushing content into that country. This follows our active engagements in China-Tibet and in Burma.

Next up, will be another mission just like it. Perhaps it will be in Cambodia, or Egypt, or Thailand, or Uzbekistan. For us, the list grows daily.

Around the world, governments are engaged in a major arms race to develop and refine cyberwar capabilities. During the recent cyber security review, U. S. President Barack Obama’s administration publicly acknowledged the world’s worst kept secret: that as part of its comprehensive strategy for cybersecurity, the administration intends to develop operational capabilities to fight and win wars in cyberspace. Last week, the U. S. Department Of Defense announced the creation of U. S. cyberspace command. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom announced a Cybersecurity Czar of its own. From Bishkek to Baltimore, Tehran to Beijing, cyberspace is being militarized and weaponless.

Canada, like all other countries, will be drawn into the emerging battle. The question is, how will it engage?

American leaders are so arrogant that they tell other countries what to do within  their own land.
STAY out of their lives and ours as well

WAKE UP.  STAND UP.   FED UP?        The WAR IS GETTING READY TO BEGIN
