Easton’s Henry fund reaches out to children

February 15th, 2011

the DJ Dream Fund is up and running.

Danroy and Angella Henry and their children, Kyle and Amber, have established the fund in memory of their son Danroy Jr., known as “DJ,” who was killed by police on Oct. 17 in Westchester County, N.Y.

the organization’s mission is to “share DJ’s love of sports by providing resources that will help promising children throughout Massachusetts participate in a sport of their choice.”

Danroy Henry said the fund will be used to provide money to help children buy sports equipment and pay for athletic fees or YMCA or gym memberships. Children age 18 or younger living in Massachusetts will be eligible.

To apply, a student has to write an essay and coach send an affirmation of need. Grants will be given in $50 allotments, based on need and the sport, for a maximum of $150 per child per year.

in its statement of principles, the organization says that “lack of equipment should not be a barrier to entry for any child in sport” and “active lifestyles are beneficial for young children.”

because of that, the fund will also support wellness programs with a coach, trainer or doctor endorsement “where physical fitness outside of sport is a goal for healthier living.”

soon, online donations will be accepted at the organization’s website, djdreamfund.org. they are being accepted now at Bank of America, Danroy DJ 12 Henry Memorial Fund, 629 Depot St., North Easton, 02356. all donations are tax-exempt.

Fundraisers are also being planned to benefit the organization. Buttons, magnets and wristbands are already being sold.

“we want to make sure through the DJ Dream Fund that we help the most deserving people,” Danroy Henry said. “We’ll look to coaches and others to help us identify deserving children.”

Angella Henry said the organization will emphasize wellness and the need to make healthy choices, as her son did. DJ Henry, 20, was a football player at Pace University and played other sports, including soccer and basketball, in his childhood.
