Selling Antiques On Ebay

April 2nd, 2011

The selling of antiques on eBay has a perplexing reputation. most people say that it is very problematic to get the cost that the item deserves, but those that do earn money at it say that you just have to know what you are doing.

So what are the tricks and tips to making money by selling antiques on eBay?

This first thing to comprehend concerning selling antiques on eBay is that the sale of antiques can take a fairly long time. People generally go to eBay for a quick fix to a problem – a lack of something.

Antiques do not actually fit into this category. another group of individuals do go there for collectibles, but they are normally cheap(ish) contemporary collectibles like Victorian dolls.

eBay does not have the name for selling antiques so those that are interested in antiques do not go there for that, although they do go there. there is also a immense risk of forgeries and imitations.

This means that selling antiques on eBay is a bit hit and miss, so you have to give an article time to sell. there is a time delay on selling antiques on eBay and you have to take this into account.

If you would like to sell antiques through eBay’s auctions, it might be better for you to sell low-priced collectibles as well as antiques. This will supply you with a cash flow until your antiques start selling and providing a regular income for you.

Be prepared to put a reserve price on your things and them have to relist them if they do not sell the first time around. another good tactic is to place the things in the longest action possible, but allow someone to buy them from you at your reserve price before the auction finishes.

When you list your things, make certain that you write like an expert. Do not be tempted to dumb down your language, because you want to show that you are a significant collector or / and dealer.

People are more likely to purchase antiques off you if you sound the part, otherwise you might come across as a chancer. Therefore, if you are selling antique telephones, learn the jargon of antique telephones and make use of it in your advertisements.

Sell antiques that have mass appeal. The likelihood of you selling a costly niche market antique on eBay are quite small, which means that you would be paying over and over again for relisting the item. This will obviously nibble away at your income.

Therefore, in summary, endeavour to sell antiques with ‘mass market’ appeal. Articles that sell well are antique dolls, games and clothes; old coins and stamps and antique domestic items like old telephones. However, you have to be prepared to wait for your sale and relist your item once or twice.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on a number of topics, and is now concerned with looking for old fashioned telephones. If you would like to know more, please visit our web site at Family Plans for Cell Phones

A busy lizzie life: Outer space mural

January 13th, 2011

Currently, we are studying outer space. I have not limited it to any specific part of space, so we are looking at all aspects, to name a few: constellations, space shuttles, planets, and space exploration. We are looking through a LOT of non-fiction books and watching some great DVD’s, I’ll post a list later.

We got a giant sized roll of paper from Dick Blick. Let me tell you something, if you can afford it, it is a GREAT investment, it will last a long time and you can cut off a big enough piece to keep lots of kids busy for a long time. For the mural, I printed off a picture of an astronaut on an 8 x 10 piece of paper (I don’t remember where I got it, I just searched on google). Then, I printed out a head shot of each of the kids on a 5 x 7 photo paper. I cut out the kids’ faces and put them in the helmet of the astronaut picture, cut the astronaut out, then laminated for more stability.

First, the kids and I painted the background with black, blue, and white paint, we tried to do swirls and big strokes to make it look like space:

Good thing we used washable paint:

Finished with the paint:

Starting to decorate with planets and stickers:

The bird of paradise constellation:

The completed project hanging in front of our fireplace:

Close ups of the astronauts, yes Nathaniel is thrilled that he is touching the sun:

After it was hung, the kids were running up to it pretending they were going to different planets and then Nathaniel started running a quiz show. Here are some of the questions he asked:

1) what object on the board is not a planet, but a star? The sun

2) Which planet has an atmosphere that would crush you if you didn’t melt first? Venus

3) what is the coldest planet and swings inside its neighbors orbit? Pluto (yes I didn’t break the news to him)

4) Which four planets have rings? Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune

More to come when the rocket makes its way in by the end of the week!

RallySport Magazine – COMMENT: ARC should look to the past

December 7th, 2010

Australian Rally Championship photographer, Ryan Lahiff, gives his take on the current state of the national championship, and what he believes could be done to revive it.

Last weekend, as the curtain closed on another championship season at Australia?s top level of rallying, you can?t help but wonder what will possibly happen next, and not in a good way either.

without the support of the Victorian Rally Championship and the bumper crop of Hyundai Excel series competitors, it would have been a very dire weekend for the ARC. but not all is lost, the ARC can still reclaim its position at the top, it just feels like it needs a damn good push in the right direction. The only problem is the people doing the pushing (CAMS, ARCom et al) don?t really seem to grasp which way to shove right now. Let?s face it, for a long time we were spoilt! not too many national championships can boast manufacturer entries from major multi-national vehicle manufacturers the likes of Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Ford over the years, and for a while we had them all. Spectators have loved the sight and sound of Eli Evans’ Honda Civic.so it?s only natural that manufacturer interests will wane, the quality of competitors will fall away, and entry lists will reduce. Motorsport is cyclical, it has its ups and downs. and whilst it?s always easy to point to the glory days and say it should always be like that, the reality is that is not sustainable. so what is sustainable and which direction should the sport be going in? The simple answer I think is backwards, and at first that seems a drastic statement, but bear with me and see if the logic plays out. Some facts though, to lay the ground work. Rallying is expensive, but all forms of motorsport are these days. should we therefore be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at doing skids in the dirt or have we collectively set the bar too far out of reach in the desperate hope of mirroring the exploits of teams and drivers on the WRC stage? In the past this wasn?t so hard, the cars in the WRC were accessible, the technology was simple, and we cheered when the likes of Ross Dunkerton, Ed Ordynski, Possum Bourne and Neal Bates took it up to the best in the world. but times have changed, technology has spiraled out of reach and costs have blown the roof off. Nowadays, even our best local drivers would struggle against those competing in the PWRC, not from an ability or talent stand point, but purely from a financial one. Look at Simon Evans. no question the concrete layer from Pakenham has the skills to finesse a car at speed with the best of the them. Hell, he?s probably better, but without the literal cement truck brimming with cash needed to even crack a start in the IRC, let alone the WRC, you kind of wonder what the point is. so while we?ve crossed our fingers and hoped the likes of Chris Atkinson in recent years, and now Brendan Reeves and Molly Taylor, will be able to break it long term onto the WRC stages, the reality is maybe that?s an ambition way past our collective hopes and dreams. let me ramble on further then. The greatest addition to the ARC this year has been the historic class running at the head of the field. Mind you, I wasn?t born when half of these cars were running the first time, so imagine my surprise when I marveled at Jack Monkhouse launching a near 40 year old Datsun higher than the ARC front runners at the Rally SA. Or will Orders power sliding his buzzing RX7 even more sideways than the current Group N cars will allow at the super special at Rally Qld. Maybe the phrase what?s old is new again applies more than we can even imagine. and perhaps that is the key, recapture what makes rallying fun, but at a sensible level. rather than shooting for the stars and falling short, maybe let?s peg it back a few rungs to try to make the ARC fun to compete in and, above all, fun to watch. so here goes, the point to my argument, and again I?m going to use an example of what?s been great about the ARC this year ? Eli Evans and that high-revving Honda. okay, Eli is well off the pace of his older brother Simon, but then again he?s only got half the wheels turning in his favour. but Eli has proven that having the latest and greatest Group N Impreza or Lancer at your disposal doesn?t make you any less interesting, far from it. I?ve heard spectators all year asking each other when the Honda Civic was due to roar through. The Hyundai Excel series has been a welcome addition to Australian rallying.so for substantially less money to purchase, and significantly less to run and maintain, should we be looking to two-wheel power for our fix? Don?t forget there are plenty of options out there and a well punted two-wheel drive rally car can be equally, if not more spectacular, than a mediocre driver in a four-wheel drive. and let?s not forget, if our sport wants to stay relevant look at what manufacturers of the day are selling. We don?t want to end up like V8 Supercars, flogging tired technology that is rapidly losing its spectator appeal. Hatchbacks are the hot commodity in the market right now, and the manufacturers are sensing this transition of interest by the buying public with the raft of hot hatches either on sale now or just around the corner. Added to this, small and large manufacturers are interested in motorsport, they just need a cost sensitive arena to promote their products. could rallying be that arena? If the Honda Australia General Manager?s comments at Rally Victoria on the weekend are anything to go by, it?s a damn good place to start and their toe in the water experience this year will no doubt lead to bigger and better next. so maybe, before the big splash on an Evo or WRX, consider some alternative options; a Ford Fiesta R2, Citroen C2, Honda Civic R3, Peugeot 207 R2, Renault Clio R3, and that?s just the cars you can buy off the shelf. Remember when the likes of Brett Middleton, Ross Mackenzie, Dean Herridge, Rick Bates and Lee Peterson built their own hot hatches and had ding dong battles all year behind the ?oh so predictable? Bourne/Bates battle of the World Rally Cars? and if the entry list from Rally Victoria is anything to go by the organisers of the Excel series need a bloody firm pat on the back. If anything is going to pull rallying back from the brink it could well be those cheap Korean buzz boxes. Why not a national series of Excels, 30 or 40 of the damn things, pushed aggressively and spiritedly all while their drivers laugh their heads off that they built their entire rally car for the cost of just one set of Impreza or Evo drive shafts. In summary, old not new. Save your pennies on centre differentials and whiz bang gearboxes. The future of the ARC could well be two-wheel drive. Imagine a bumper field of historics and a crop of high-revving, hard-charging hatches just like the ones selling in big numbers from dealerships around the country, not the big spoilers and blow off valves we?re all used to cringing at when we pull up to the traffic lights!

Holy Cat Pee, Batman! « Sisters From Different Misters

October 28th, 2010

Boscoe, the newest member of our family likes to sleep in remote areas hidden from the world. Under Luca’s crib, under Claire’s bed, the guest room bed, the basement, you know. Hidden. She’s not like Lila-Cat who steals Sadie’s bed or recliner, depending on her mood. Boscoe enjoys her space.

So it’s no surprise to us that she frequently gets locked in rooms, say for example, in Luca’s room when he’s napping. On many occasions, Luca has awoken from a nap early because Boscoe is locked in there. We usually do a Boscoe sweep of a room before we declare it empty.

Someone, and I’m not sure who, closed the guest bedroom door. We never really noticed that Boscoe was missing, per se, we just more or less noticed we were a cat short…sorta.

Around 4:30, I asked Claire to go get her kitty frame from her room. I had developed a photo of her stuffed kitten, Kitty, that she makes Matt take with her to work. The picture is more specifically, “Super Kitty,” Kitty’s alter-ego. She went upstairs, then yelled down and said, “Mama! I locked my door. I can’t get in!”

*Grumblegrumblegrumblegrumble*

I opened up the door next to hers, the guest room, and was nearly knocked over by the scent.

Cat piss. And a whole lot of it.

Boscoe, the poor thing, had been locked in there. But instead of clawing at the door or crying, she slept and took it all in stride. Clearly not a cat used to being ‘belonged’ to.

There was pee stains everywhere. Seven spots on the bedding, on the pillows, the sleeping bag in the closet, some fabric swatches, the curtains…EVERYWHERE.

And I couldn’t get mad at the cat. Of course not. It wasn’t her fault. And it’s not like she’s going to go back up there and pee everywhere. She was locked in there, from what I gather, a long time.

While I cleaned, she followed me. Keeping me within a few feet, making sure she was seen. Poor thing.

I pitched everything smelling offending out the window. And for anyone who’s ever been pregnant, the sense of smell is far amplified during pregnancy. For me when I’m NOT pregnant, I have an extremely sensitive sense of smell. So imagine being pregnant and having a heightened olfactory sense. YAH. IT SUCKED.

And I know, I know, pregnant people aren’t supposed to be around cat pee, but c’mon! It was in my house. In my guest room, which might I add will be Luca’s room come the arrival of the new baby. Luca will not be sleeping in a room that smells like cat piss.

Matt went upstairs and said that it didn’t smell as strong as I said it was. But thenagain, he’s stuffed up today. It smells. I win.

I’ve broken out the vinegar in the steam cleaner, dusted the carpet with baking soda, stripped all linens from the premises. It still smells. So I cracked the window for the night. I’m desperate.

And did I mention this sucks?

*Oh, and Matt was able to unlock Claire’s door. I told her if she does that again she’s sleeping on the couch.

Custom stickers from stikers.co.uk

October 16th, 2010

Custom window stickers have been traditionally used in cars, and even store front windows. Most car dealers, place their business sticker, with logo and contact details on it to the rear window of every car they sell. This is a way of identifying themselves as the seller of that particular vehicle. This also acts as a form of advertising and brand awareness for the company. All window stickers like this are placed on the inside of the window so the image or graphics are facing out. Therefore in order to achieve this, the printing company have to print the sticker backwards, so it appears the correct way when it is placed in the window. There are many different types of window stickers on the market, some better than others.

Types of Window Sticker

There are various types of window stickers, so when considering purchasing a sticker, it is always best to find out which type is going to be more suitable for you. Vinyl stickers are the most popular type of window sticker; however there are also different options when i

t comes to vinyl window stickers.

Removable Rear Window Stickers

Removable rear window stickers are exactly that, they can be removed. Some stickers when removed leave behind remnants of the sticker, which can look unsightly and can be very difficult to remove. However with removable stickers the adhesive is strong enough to stick firmly but it can also be removed easily without leaving anything behind.

These stickers don’t actually have any adhesive at all; therefore just like the removable stickers they can easily be removed.

Permanent Custom Window Stickers

These stickers are applied with very strong adhesive; therefore they cannot be removed without using quite a lot of force.  These are good for shop windows and for signs that need to stay there for a long period of time without being removed.

High Tack Custom Window Stickers

Again these are good for shop windows and for stickers that need to stay there for a very long time. Window stickers can be seen on shop windows, inside car windows, they can also be used for parking permits, for advertising purposes and for various other reasons. Some people use window stickers in the home for safety reasons.  For example, if you have floor to ceiling windows or large patio doors, putting stickers on them is a way of making them visible to young energetic children.  These kind of stickers are normally not custom and you can just purchase them at any toy store or supermarket.

Custom stickers are slightly more expensive than off the shelf window stickers, however you can decide exactly what you want your sticker to look like, and for companies, you can use them to create brand awareness as well as use it is as a form of low scale advertising.

Melissa Nibbles: Good Guilt & Three Things Thursday

September 10th, 2010

Good morning friends! How are you feeling? Feelin’ fiiiine I hope! Today I want to talk about something that happened to me last night. Maybe some of you can relate.

Before bed I like to have a snack before I drift off to dreamland. Last night I chose to have an ice cream sundae to help me along on my quest in putting on a few pounds. Not a big sundae, just a few scoops of cookie dough ice cream, some chocolate sauce, and a big squirt of whipped cream. I sat in bed and enjoyed every delicious bite. I even licked the bowl. No sooner than two minutes after I ate the sundae, I began to panic and started feeling guilty for eating the sundae. I was worried that I would wake up the next morning a hippopotamus. I haven’t felt that way in a long time. I ate ice cream last week and over the weekend and felt zero guilt. Nothing was different this time. Maybe it was the culmination of all the ice cream and extra things I’ve been eating lately. I don’t know. The guilt actually kept me up for a good hour. I sat there imagining not being able to button my pants in the morning and thought of running an extra mile to work off the sundae. Ridiculous! I finally fell asleep and when I woke up this morning, I was not a hippopotamus, my pants fit fine, and I DEFINATELY DID NOT run to exercise the sundae off. I woke up fine and I didn’t feel guilty anymore. I think I just needed to ride it out. I’m probably going to feel this way every now and then while I’m trying to gain weight. I’ve decided that this is good. When these feelings come, I’m going to ride it out and accept them. In fact, I’m going to label the guilty feeling, Good Guilt. Good because I’m breaking my old food rules that need to be broken if I want to gain weight. No, I’m not going to eat crap all the time because I want to gain healthy weight, but if I want treats, I’ll have them. When I’ve reached my goal weight, hopefully I won’t feel these feelings often, but if I do, I’ll still call it Good Guilt because I shouldn’t feel guilty for eating a piece of food. It’s not a crime.

Today’s Thursday and we know what that means….Three Things Thursday! If you’re new to the blog, this is a post where I list three things that are annoying me this week. You get your chance in the comments.

  • Stop Asking Questions! I’m so annoyed with this one woman at work who asks a thousand questions whenever we have a meeting. Our meetings would only last 20 minutes if she would shut up. Seriously, yesterday this woman asked questions for 20 minutes straight. Some of them twice! She has no idea how to use a computer so she’s always asking the most basic questions. She needs to take a computer class, listen to people when they actually show her how to use certain programs, or just quit. I hated people like this in college too. They would keep raising their hands asking the most insane questions keeping us in class for way too long. SHUT UP.
  • Not Giving Credit. You have to be a real piece of work to blatantly steal people’s blog ideas, blog posts, or names. I’ve seen this happen to two of my favorite bloggers/friends this week and it sucks. If you’re going to copy people, at least give them credit by linking to them or acknowledging it some other way.
  • Pumpkin Spiced Lattes. I’m so sick of hearing about these stupid things. It’s a drink. Calm down.

What’s bugging you this week? Let’s hear it!

Why The Best Drum Set For A Newbie Is A Cheap Kit!

June 17th, 2010

Have you forever dreamed of having a go at learning the drums? Well why not give it a go? It is great fun and is often a great form of stress relief.

In order to get started out, you are going to need to pick out your initial drum set. Whenever we all dream of drumming, we visualise the great rock bands, with their drummers surrounded by all sizes of drums and cymbals, knocking out loud memorable rhythms. The fact is that you do not basically require that number of drums to get started out, in fact a starter drum kit will simply come with four or perhaps 5 crucial drums.

A basic set of adult drums will normally contain the following pieces. The largest item will be the bass drum. You should also get a more compact snare drum, a couple of tom-toms, a rack tom and a floor tom. As well as the drums themselves, a set will usually also include hi-hat and crash cymbals.

As a starter, you actually don’t have to have any more kit than that to get started. Only after you have perfected the basics of drumming should you begin to think about purchasing extra drums.

Keep in mind, when you see the rock bands we spoke about at the start, their drummers are professionals who have practised for a long time to attain the required skills required for playing larger sets.

Therefore keep your first drum set to the bare minimum. You don’t require to commit a whole lot of money on your first kit, a cheap drum set will be more than adequate to get you started out. And think about it this way, what if you purchase your drums and find out that you are not really a natural after all and give up after a couple of days. When you purchase a inexpensive set you’re not risking wasting your money on something that might just sit around collecting dust!

So don’t be concerned about buying a named brand to start with, start out basic and should you truly get into your drumming, trade your first set in and upgrade them to a named brand like Ludwig.

And remember, don’t purchase a set that comes with drums and cymbals of all shapes and sizes. Playing the drums is not as straightforward as it might look to the untrained eye. Mastering the drums takes hours and hours of training and fantastic natural coordination and rhythm. Therefore start practising basic beats using only two or three drums, and then add components as you go along.

So if you do make a decision to spend your cash, you don’t have to get the best drum set in the shop, a low-priced set is fine for any starter!

Leather Camera Bag and Cases, the Height of Luxury and Style – All …

Leather Camera Bag and Cases, the Height of Luxury and Style

Spending eight hours or even more in your workplace is quite a task; you do this routine for five days a week, not to mention your overtime. But it doesn’t matter much since you have to work and earn money to finance all your expenses. If you have a family, you have to work even harder. But life is not just about working, you also need to play and rest.

Though you need to spend a lot of time for work, you should not forget that you should also take time for your other activities. Photography is a great hobby; in fact, there are those who make a living out of it. If you love photography, then it’s time that you reward yourself a little for being too hard working. Why not purchase a leather bag for your camera?

Bags made from leather are top quality. It will last for a long time especially if it’s maintained properly. Leather is quite popular, you can find many items made from leather like shoes, belts, wallets, etc. and the most common are bags.

Here are famous leather camera bags brands available in local stores or in online stores:

1. Canon
2. Olympus
3. Leica
4. Sony
5. Billingham
6. Targus
7. Icon
8. Nikon, and many more

Aside from leather bags, there are also camera cases made from leather.

You can find leather camera cases for less than twenty dollars; but if you want to buy the expensive ones, you can actually find camera cases with costs reaching over three hundred dollars.

For people who are worried if the camera case will match their outfits, there is no need to worry. There are camera cases which you can show off, instead of hiding them in your coat. Camera cases from RedEnvelope can actually coordinate with your outfit. You find one in shades of red, green, and many more.

Finding the right camera bag or case is easy if you know what you really want. If you’re a beginner, you don’t have to carry a lot of accessories, so a basic leather camera bag will be enough. But if you do need to carry a few accessories, you can choose a larger leather bag with many pockets to hold your valuable accessories.

Just make sure that the bag you choose will give you easy access to your camera and other accessories when you need it; and most important of all, the bag should not be a hassle when you carry it around. For some people color is not that important. It’s even better to get a camera bag or case that is middle toned because if it catches dirt, it will not be noticed easily. And besides, it can avoid overheating during hot weather conditions.

Now that you know what important things to consider when purchasing a camera case or bag, start your search now. Give yourself a break from work and find that camera bag/case that you need.

It’s not bad to spend a little amount of money for your camera bag. Besides, you don’t want to damage your precious camera. Your camera is a worthy investment so you need to protect it whenever you carry it around. Find a camera bag or case now; a bag made from leather is probably the most excellent choice you’ll ever make.

what are some remedies for a horse with weak hooves? | Horse …

May 20th, 2010

My horse has bad front feet. He usually has to wear shoes, gets cracks in the fronts of his hooves, and he has very weak frogs that don’t grow well. He also gets thrush frequently (all of this just in his front hooves). I’ve read about products like keratex and other supplements (that strengthen hooves) but don’t want to spend the money on something that might not work. Any suggestions?

Have a talk with a good farrier and see what they would recommened. Ours suggested products with Biotin in it to strengthen one of our horses cracked feet. Lately he’s been losing shoes every three weeks! And we’ve seen a big improvement already and his feet arn’t cracking as badly. It might take a long time for the hoof to heal completly and repair.
Also make sure you hoof oil regularly into the cracks of your horses hoof and try to prevent water from getting into your horses feet as this can make it worse.
You could also check your horses diet to make sure he’s getting enough minerals and vitamins and stuff for healthy feet.
Hope this helps!

Coin Collecting- Tips For Beginners

May 12th, 2010

Are you interested in pursuing the hobby of coin collecting? If so, then you are not the only one. There are many reasons as to why coin collecting is such a popular hobby and one is because it is not a very easy task. So, if you wish to make your own collection of coins as a hobby or if you wish to do so in order to reap profits at a later date, there are many factors that you must keep in mind.

Research is the foremost factor that you should take into consideration while coin collecting. There is no end to the amount of research you can do and you can never do enough research. The most successful collectors of coins in the world are the people who took the time out to research and explore the entire arena of coin collection. The different subjects related to coin collecting that you should research on include types of coins, history of coins, recommended supplies for coin collection, coin values and more.

If you are a beginner, the best thing for you to do is collect as many coins as you possibly can. Try saving all the coins that you come across so that you can examine them in detail later on. This approach works for most beginners as many of them are not aware of the value of their coins, especially if the coin has not been examined thoroughly. While following this method, it will not take a long time to develop a rather large collection of such coins. At this point, all coin collectors should conduct an examination of their coins and separate out the valuable ones from the others. From this point, with some experience, coin collectors should slowly change their collecting habits.

Once a sufficiently large collection has been gathered, with the first set of coins closely examined and sorted, the important thing to consider is storage. Unfortunately, there are many beginners who commit big mistakes while storing their coins. Many collectors simply put their coins into a box or jar. Although such a casing is enough for storage of coins, it can also result in irreparable damage. If you own coins that are rare or high in value, chances are their value will increase with time, and so it is important to take proper care of them. Normally, it is not recommended to store coins in coin holders for a long time. They are alright for display but should not be used for storing. For storage, it is best to use a coin album or a coin folder.

Another important factor for developing a coin collection is knowing what you are buying. Whether you are collecting as a hobbyists for as an investment, it is always good to have enough information regarding your purchase. All coin collectors wish to gather valuable or rare coins and the only way to get your hands on such coins is through purchase. Almost all professional coin dealers will have a good understanding and view of the worth of their coins. Therefore, there is not much danger of scamming, although it is always better to examine the value and condition of a coin before making any decision. If a coin costs more than twenty dollars, research it.

Apart from coin dealers, the internet is a viable source from which to purchase coins, especially through auction websites. If you are a beginner, you could not ask for a better facility. You will be surprised by what you find. There are a number of renowned coin collectors who sold their entire collection online. As stated before, caution is of utmost necessity while purchasing. There are many people who, unlike dealers, do not know the full value of the coin they are selling. This could result in the over estimation of the worth of a coin. If you have not done enough research and do not have sufficient information, you could end up paying more than you should.

Adjustable Weight Drivers – Do They Really Work

May 2nd, 2010

Adjustable weight drivers and static weighted drivers are arguably the hottest product in golf today. These are drivers that are designed to affect the flight of the ball to fly in a specific way. The combinations can promote higher or lower ball flight, draw spin or fade spin, or straight ball flight. The adjustable weight drivers are just that, adjustable, the rules of golf allow the weights in the clubs to be adjustable, so long as they are not moved during a round. Static weighted drivers have the weights permanently placed in the position to give the player the desired ball flight.

While it may be interesting about what is a weighted driver, the key question would be, “do they work”? Technically, the answer is yes. Testing on a hitting machine bears this out. A great gauge of what works and what doesn’t would be to watch the pros. Very recently, the golf tournament commentators have documented the fact that Phil Mickelson is carrying two drivers, to promote the flight he wants for a given tournament.

It has been known for a very long time that placing weight in different places on the club head will change the playing characteristics of the head. Until recently, however, adding enough weight to make the desired ball flight changes would make the overall weight of the club too heavy and difficult to control. The same high strength titanium alloys that allow the head designers to make the jumbo sized heads of today, makes it possible to specifically place the weights in the desired area of the head.

Now we know that specific weighting works and has been known for a long time, your question might be “how will it help me”? The answer to that question depends on how consistent you are with where the ball hits your clubface. If you tend to spray the ball all over the course in random patterns, you would probably be better served if you bought a club with the maximum forgiveness. But, if you have one fairly consistent ball flight, (draw, hook, slice, fade), weighted heads can help you lessen the effects of miss hits.
