Folding bookshelves

October 16th, 2010

I’m a big fan of folding furniture. I like to rearrange rooms from time to time, and that’s so easy to do when the furniture’s lightweight and folds nearly flat. All my bookshelves have been foldable for years. It used to be hard to find these, but now they seem to be everywhere. They’re very stable and support plenty of weight.

This one pictured to the left is a tall, narrow, four-tier shelf that tucks away neatly into small spaces. It’s made of solid wood, costs $64.99 and comes in several wood shades.

For larger spaces, you can use a wider three-tier stackable shelf – or two. Like the other one, it’s made of real wood and is available in several shades. It costs $69.99 and should hold about the same number of books as the other one, hence the prices being similar. It’s designed so you can stack one of these units on top of another, which gives you six shelves for the same floorspace as three.

What Does a Literary Agent Do?: How an Agent Helps Writers Publish …

September 5th, 2010

Many novelists, after finally finishing their books, prepare to contact publishing houses only to discover they don’t accept unsolicited manuscripts. While a few do, finding a literary agent to represent their novel will greatly increase a writers chance at publication.

Even so, many novelists are reluctant to accept the help of a literary agency due to the 15% fee. However, what a good literary agent actually does is worth far more. Here is how an agent helps authors get their books on the shelves.

Literary Agents Help Edit Novels

Novels typically go through several revisions before publication, and literary agents are an important part of this process. After spending so much time on a novel, it is difficult for writers to see their work through fresh, unbiased eyes. Literary agents are, by trade, voracious readers, and can offer valuable suggestions on improving the novel before submitting it to any publishers.

Every agency will differ as far as how much editing they will suggest. In all cases, the point is to make the manuscript as strong as possible before an editor reviews it.

Remember, literary agents should never charge a “reading” fee, or anything like it. Agents are paid a standard 15% commission once the novel has been sold. Writers should never pay a fee until a contract with a publisher is signed.

Literary Agents Find Editors and Publishers for Novels

A big part of a literary agent’s job is to know the market. Most agents only represent certain genres – non-fiction, horror, mystery, etc – and know the markets for these genres, and which editors are most likely to be interested in those books, inside and out.

Once a novel is ready for submission, a literary agent will start contacting editors at publishing houses that will be interested in taking the book in the direction the author and agent want. There is much more to publishing a novel than cover art and printing, of course! Knowing the market is an essential part of publication, and this is where having a literary agent is worth much more than the 15% commission.

Literary Agents Negotiate Contracts

When a publisher is interested in taking on the novel, there is a lot of paperwork to be done. Contracts can be long and tedious, and agents can explain the process to new authors and help them negotiate the best deal possible.

There are other things to consider, such as foreign rights, movie rights, audio and ebook rights, that agents are experts in handling. It is not advisable for an inexperienced writer to take these deals on alone.

Literary Representation is Important to Getting a Book Deal

For a new author looking to publish a book, contacting a literary agent may be the most important step they ever take. Literary agents take on projects they love and believe in, and will take pride in securing the best deal possible for their clients.

Modishly Unique Library Promises To Be A Reader's Nest – The …

July 25th, 2010

We have been left inundated by a torrent of designs inspired by consumerist culture. Luxurious houses, chic offices and plush shopping malls are the only visual landmarks to the near absence of a library with inviting interiors. Designer Mihaela Stojanova has designed a library with stylish and well groomed interiors that give young a chance to choose between a video arcade and a reading place.

What lends unique freshness to Mihaela’s design for the library on the first floor of the Multimedia Library and Exhibition Center is the ‘box shelves’. The box shelves are basically wooden blocks with integrated shelves for keeping the books. The modular shelves rotate independently round a metal bar and are used both as a curtain between the hallway and the library and also for book storage. In fact the shelves can also be placed anywhere within the library to give a different look to the interior and the exterior.

The most interesting aspect of the shelves is the digital display hung on its backside. These provide vital information about book and media library, announcements, news and many other things.

Fireflies and Jellybeans: Featured Friday with Kierste from Brown …

May 21st, 2010

Hello Fireflies & Jellybeans readers!

I’m Kierste, from brown paper packages, and I’m loving the opportunity to be here with you today, on Fawnda’s fabulous blog!

I have a fun, simple project that I’m excited to share with you today!

CARDBOARD BOX BASKETS

After completing the entertainment center we built for our basement, I was in desperate need of some baskets to go on the shelves behind the doors.

I love baskets, and don’t mind spending a little more on nice ones if they are going to be in a prominent place. However, these would be hidden behind doors, and would be in the throes of the basement, so I just didn’t want to spend a lot on them.

So, I went on a hunt to find baskets for around $5–I knew I could paint them or jazz them up somehow, as long as they were the right size and shape. I went everywhere, and had absolutely no luck. I ended up at Walmart last, and when I couldn’t find anything there, I headed to the organization section. When I saw these sturdy moving boxes, I knew just what I wanted to do!

These “cardboard box baskets” are perfect. They are darling, sturdy, and cost less than $3 a piece to make. I love how they turned out, so I now I need to make one more to fill the whole space.

They are SUPER easy to make–this is how I did it!

ITEMS YOU NEED:

  • sturdy book or moving boxes, with handles
  • spray paint
  • double stick tape
  • scrapbook paper
  • cardstock
  • distress ink
  • printed text

DIRECTIONS:

1. Spray paint boxes. It took 2 coats and 1 can of paint to do two boxes. It will just depend on the color of your box, and if there is any writing/graphics.

2. Print out desired text on cardstock. Cut it out, distress the edges, and mat it on a coordinating piece of cardstock. Distress edges.

3. Cut your scrapbook paper to fit entire front side of your box. Take a tiny bit of tape to hold the paper on the box, then trace the handle opening on the inside of the box, so you will know where to cut. Cut out the handle opening, then secure the entire piece of cardstock on your box. Distress the edges of the box and paper.

4. Using the double stick tape, attach your printed text to the box.

Ta-da!! You have darling, simple, and cheap cardboard baskets that you can use anywhere. These would be great in closets, the garage, pantries, or inside furniture doors.

In the entertainment center:

It has been a pleasure to be here, thank you so much for letting me visit! I have lots of other fun projects on my blog, and I hope you will come by to say hi–I would love it!

Build Your Own Wine Cellar

May 3rd, 2010

Contrary to popular belief, it is not a very difficult task to build a wine cellar, within the limited budget and the space available in one’s own house. Nowadays, there are many kits available which help the wine lovers to build their own wine cellars at a fairly reasonable price. These kits are differentiated depending on the size and type of wine cellar one requires. Some of the kinds of wine cellars are rectangular bins, case storages, triangular shelves, individual six columns, individual three columns, curved corners, individual half weights and diamond cubes, among others. These are generally very easy to assemble and do not require any special kind of expertise for constructing. Besides, most of the kits come with manuals which provide a step by step detailed guide to building the wine cellar.

The kits are priced depending on the quality of the materials used as well as its size. The price of the kits increases as the quality of the material improves and vice versa. However, it has been seen that these kits are more economical and reasonably priced than the custom made wine cellars.

In addition to the actual rack to store the wine bottles, one can also enhance the wine cellars by buying the many different wine accessories available such as wine dispensers, wine coolers, decorative corkscrews and uncorking machines. These add value to one’s wine cellar and also serve as decorative items.

It is of utmost importance that when one is building their own wine cellar, certain guidelines must be adhered to. One of the most important guidelines is that the wine cellar must be placed in the coolest spot of the house, away from excessive noise, vibration or heat.
