Flip Video offers Flip Video Action Tripod – SlashGear

March 22nd, 2011

Flip has been making its awesome little camcorders for a long time now including the Ultra HD, MinoHD, and the Slide HD. The Flip camcorders are cheap and that low price makes them some of the most popular camcorders on the market today. Flip has a new accessory for its camcorder line that has debuted.

The accessory is a tripod called the Flip Video Action Tripod and it is designed with lots of flexibility to be able to stand the Flip camcorders on a surface and more. The tripod is designed to allow it to attach to all sorts of things like a bike or helmet for instance.

Attaching the tripod to a helmet means that it will make for a nice little action camera. The tripod is cheap enough at $24.99 and it will work with all Flip camcorders. The neck of the tripod will allow the user to position the camera at any angle. The only downside I see is that the Flip camcorders aren’t rugged and one good crash might spell the end of your camera.

Cisco Linksys E3000 review

December 6th, 2010

For the money get a Draytek 2710n.

Far better and more features.

The Draytek lacks gigabit ports, which is a rather glaring omission. It’s quite surprising how many wireless routers out there still only offer 100Mbit ports.

Erm so you actually use an ADSL router as a switch?

Much better to run all your main infrastructure off a proper gigabit switch and just hook into the ADSL router from that.

The wimpy ADSL bandwith isnt going to improve with gigabit on the router.

Gigabit is superflous on DSL routers, especially as they usually only have 4 ports. I’d rather the manufacturers spent the money elsewhere.

1. You can flash dd-wrt firmware into this router and get all sorts of features including 3G dongle support, VPN server/client, file and printer sharing, etc.

2. it is a completely retarded idea to use a separate Gigabit switch because:

- you need more space

- you need another power outlet

- you need an extra LAN cable

- you will have 3 unused 100Mbps ports on the router because they aren’t good for anything nowadays

- cheap Gigabit switches have lower switching performance than fully fledged Gigabit routers

- if you connect Wireless N 300Mbps capable router with 100Mbps LAN port to a Gigabit switch you will be limited to 100Mbps when you transfer data between wireless and wired clients — this is not the case with this and other Gigabit routers that are available on the market.

Finally, I bought TP-Link TL-WR1043ND (also 4 Gigabit ports + Wireless-N) for 60 EUR. Simplest and cheapest 4 port Gigabit switch is 35 EUR. Do your math, and eventually you will figure out that two separate devices cost more while they don’t offer any benefits — on the contrary, they have drawbacks.

Ok so you reckon a £35-£80 dedicated gigabit switch will be less performant than the £3 worth of switch option built into the wireless router with all its other parts?

4 ports whether gigabit or not isnt much use. no one buys 4 port kit to use seriously for networking. Its 8 ports minimum or nothing.

When you have 4+ PCs 2 printers, slingbox, Xbox etc. 4 ports isnt going very far so you need a switch. is your house/office that small and cramped you dont have a spare socket or power lead?

The cost of another CAT5E/6 cable, oh dear the expense.

Also the router may not be in the best position (via landline) for the other PC gear so a switch is still needed down the line.

If you need to do serious data transfer you dont tend to bother with wireless anyway.

I vowed never to buy a Cisco/Linksys router again after they way the mistreated those of us who bought the WAG160N. it never worked properly and when they discontinued it, they stopped supporting it with new firmware to address the problems.

Anyone who buys this had better hope it works bug-free out of the box.

£35-£80 dedicated gigabit switches?!?

And what switching chip do you think those have inside, huh? Probably the same £3 one, the rest you are paying is for the nice "dedicated" packaging.

You will have to put your hand deeper in the pocket if you want serious, dedicated Gigabit switch — those usually do not come with 8 ports and at sub-£100 price point.

Moreover, it is 4 ports + wireless so for normal users (1-2 PCs, two notebooks, network printer, NAS) it should be enough. Not everyone lives in a spacey castle surrounded with electronics like yourself.

Oh, and who in their right mind uses consoles for gaming? That’s so 80′s.

Finally, you said Gigabit ports are not needed for routers. that is the most stupid thing I ever heard. What if you have a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem on the WAN side? You know, the one that allows more than 100Mbps speeds?

Clueless like all the others but with money to burn. Shh, come here, I have a bridge to sell ya’

"Finally, you said Gigabit ports are not needed for routers. that is the most stupid thing I ever heard. What if you have a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem on the WAN side? You know, the one that allows more than 100Mbps speeds?"

Hmm and those with such connections are going to run their infrasctructure off a rinky dink £100 router and just four ethernet ports?

I think not.

At the end of the day we are talking about home installations. In which case I still stand by my recommendation.

Enterprise installations (that wouldnt use Linksys, they will use the proper older brother Cisco brand stuff, at least for the support) will obviously need all the bandwidth they can get but thats very different infrasctructure. they wont be running off home/SOHO 4 port routers whether gigabit or not.

I still reckon most on this site will run a router then a gigabit switch coming off that for the flexibility it gives.

B3yond the Report 11.02.10: Looking into the PSP 2

B3yond the Report 11.02.10: Looking into the PSP 2 Posted by Derek Robbins on 11.02.2010

News on the Sony phone and the PSP 2, Demon’s Souls 2 not being in development, a new loyalty incentive for Playstation users, the weekly PSN update and more!

Hello and welcome to B3yond the Report! For those who are new to the 411mania scene, you may think this is a new column, but it is not! This is the resurrection of the weekly Sony column. Basically, it is a recap of the most recent Sony news. Did you miss something in the world of Sony this week? Then I probably have you covered. Rejoice! Look out for a re-launched Nintendophiles soon as well!

Before I get started, a quick thank you to this column’s original author, Mark Salmela. He did a great job weekly with this column and is the main reason why I wanted to see it re-launched. I hope that the column can live up to the standard of quality he put-out. It might take a couple of weeks for me to find my feet and make this column awesome, but I’ll do my best to get it there dammit.

With that out of the way, let’s get this started!

PSP 2 to feature more RAM than the X-Box 360?

There is always something rumored when it comes to Sony handhelds. The PSP 2 was rumored for what feels like forever, but then word eked out on a Playstation Phone of sorts and so the PSP 2 was thrown aside. Well, the Playstation Phone was actually revealed in the middle of last week, so it’s time to turn our heads and look back to a familiar location! The PSP 2!

Before we talk about that though, some thoughts on the Playstation Phone. Pictures leaked of it over the weekend, allegedly, and it looks pretty interesting. It’s a phone that slides out to reveal a control pad exactly like one would see on a Playstation console. As Sony hasn’t confirmed anything, we don’t know what the phone plays exactly. Will they be treating it as an entirely new system? Will they unleash the PSP library on it? It is kind of frustrating to know that it exists, but not exactly know what it will be able to do.

That said, I actually am not sure this is such a wise move. As a gamer, I prefer this sort of gaming phone to something like an iPhone, because, well, it uses an actual controller. Call me crazy, but I don’t like using my fingers to obstruct my view of what is going on in the game. That said, will other people feel the same way? The Playstation Phone seems to pretty clearly be aimed at taking on the iPhone, but I feel people who play games on their iPhone generally don’t care about a more hardcore, hands-on experience. I could be wrong, but I don’t think the Playstation Phone would steal a ton of users away from the iPhone. It could attract some gamers who haven’t thought about purchasing a gaming phone before, but I’m not too sure how this will work out for Sony. I’d hate for them to go out and unleash another flop like the PSP Go.

Speaking of the PSP Go, let’s get to that PSP 2 stuff. According to Kotaku, at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony unveiled the PSP 2 to select members of the media. It apparently will feature two thumbsticks, an HD screen, a touch pad on the back that is similar to a mouse’s track pad and will sport 1 GB of RAM almost twice as much RAM as the X-Box 360 has at 512 MB. Apparently Sony wants the PSP 2 to not only be the next step up for the PSP, but to also blur the line between console and hand-held gaming.

Rumor has it, the PSP 2 will go the PSP Go route and abandon the UMDs. Really, who likes those things anyway? Good riddance. Sony apparently is fiddling with different ideas to replace the UMD, though some speculate that games will be held on the platform’s memory stick. I would be pretty surprised if Sony didn’t have some sort of physical media to place into the device. Didn’t several outlets say they wouldn’t sell the PSP Go because of its digital distribution leanings? Wasn’t the PSP Go a colossal failure? Why would they want to go back on that route? Obviously, nothing is final Kotaku said the design for the handheld isn’t final as they showed off two different versions of it but it will be interesting to see the route they decide to go with this.

I have been a pretty big detractor of the PSP. I felt that, compared to the DS at least, the PSP offered very little in terms of captivating content. I recently turned traitor on this idea, since six of the games I have purchased this year have been PSP titles. That said, it took several years for the PSP to become a handheld I found myself playing on a regular basis. I hope the PSP 2 is able to deliver captivating content soon upon release. It will pretty much have to It will be in direct competition with the highly anticipated 3DS. Well, as long as part of the launch strategy isn’t “it can play movies on this format you have no use for outside of this tiny little screen!” I imagine it will get off to a better start.

VG247 reports that the PSP 2 is currently slated for a late 2011 launch. The Nintendo 3DS is currently slated for a March 2011 release in North America, giving it quite the jump. I suppose one way of combating the promised 3D of the 3DS is to provide ridiculously impressive handheld graphics. I’ll be interested to see how next generation’s hand-held wars plays out, if this rumor turns out to be correct.

Christmas already ruined, Demon’s Souls 2 not currently in development

It’s November 1st, people are getting ready for the Holidays. Cheer is at record highs, people are contemplating being nice to each other and if you work in a department store, well, get ready for two straight months of Christmas music for 6+ hours daily. From Software decided to ruin the festive mood by announcing that Demon’s Souls 2 would not start development any time soon. This disputes the rumor that an official announcement for Demon’s Souls 2 was just around the corner. Talk of a sequel wasn’t immediately thrown out though.

In an interview with the Guardian, Demon’s Souls producer Takeshi Kaiji had the following to say:

“At the moment, my answer is ‘no sequel!’ I have been encouraged by all the players, and this title is so well supported, and besides we like this title so much… Well, this is my own feeling, but I think one day we can bring you another Demon’s Souls”

The first thing that leaps out at you is Kaiji saying right off the bat: “at the moment”. If you know “video game producer speak” like I, or any other person who spends far too much time on the internet does, this means that a sequel is planned and will probably be made at some point, but at this exact moment of time, it is not being made. With his initial wording, I would say that a sequel will probably happen at some point. His going even further and pretty much saying “Everyone likes it and I think one day it could happen.” Pretty much seals the deal.

Does Demon’s Souls need a sequel though? It’s a very difficult, yet unique game. Would it be possible to recreate the surprise glory of the original through a sequel? Honestly, parts of me want the team to work on a different title and branch out. After all, not every game in the world needs a sequel of some sort I’m looking at you Force Unleashed so why not end it at one? I suppose it could be Final Fantasy like in execution where Demon’s Souls 2 has nothing canonically in common with the original, but I would personally be interested in what the team can do elsewhere.

Then again, if Demon’s Souls does indeed get its sequel, I don’t think I would exactly complain

A reason not to cheat on your Playstation?

Club Nintendo is a pretty good idea. It rewards you for buying new Nintendo games you probably would have pirated

Your entire Guide to Choosing Inexpensive Inground Fiberglass Pools

Your entire Guide to Choosing Inexpensive Inground Fiberglass Pools

The decision to buy and set up a swimming inground fiberglass pools is akin to other main life investments. Even though not pretty the same as buying a house, constructing a inground fiberglass pools is really equivalent to buying a higher end vehicle or a recreational camping vehicle. Just as with autos, you will discover many selections, sorts and cost factors associated with swimming pools. In-ground inground fiberglass pools are a clever alternative for the discerning homeowner.

When producing such a significant expense, it’s clever to look whatsoever from the inground fiberglass poolsoptions. You’ll find 3 basic sorts, concrete, fiberglass and pools with vinyl liners. Concrete pools would be the Cadillac or BMW from the inground fiberglass poolsarena and their price is much beyond the much more reasonable costs of liner or inground fiberglass pools. An first price assessment will almost usually present that a vinyl pool is much less costly than a fiberglass model, to the tune of five to 10 thousand bucks.

Even though that is certainly appealing, the issue with this assessment is the fact that it relies solely for the first expense costs and does not take into account the lifetime fees included in having and keeping a swimming pool. The savvy soon-to-be pool owner recognizes that liners will sooner or later will need to be replaced and concrete pools require re-plastering.

Neither 1 of these of these needed maintenance activities is going to be needed in the short-term, nonetheless the complete concept of investing in an in-ground swimming facility could be the truth that it is going to be around for the lifetime from the household having the house, 20 to 30 many years. Liners will need to be replaced in about eight to ten many years and most concrete pools will will need tile operate or re-plastering in about the same timeframe.

Inground fiberglass pools that are well-maintained require no extensive overhauls and this can mean a long-term savings in the neighborhood of 3 to five thousand bucks. Corporations that set up concrete or liner pools rarely provide the chance for homeowners to choose to do some or most from the preparation operate themselves. A number of reputable inground fiberglass pools companies provide a range of options and cost factors based on the homeowner’s desires and handy-man expertise.

The least costly option general that’s only for the most skilled of homeowner’s is really a self-installation package deal. Under this scenario, the homeowner receives the inground fiberglass pools shell and gear but takes responsibility for all from the nitty-gritty labor; excavating, leveling, backfilling, and concrete operate. For those using the expertise, the costs common among $15,000 and $30,000 dependent upon pool size and options. At one other end from the spectrum would be the homeowners who choose to leave the whole procedure to the professionals, from installation to concrete to electrical operate. Some even choose to create the security fencing needed into the package deal.

Designing the Perfect Camera Cases

April 12th, 2010

Designing the perfect camera cases involves a good deal of insight. After all, this isn’t just a tote you are selecting because it has a snazzy color scheme. A practical part of the serious photographer’s arsenal, the protects potentially thousands of dollars of equipment. It also sends a message to everyone who sees it that the person who carries this case is serious about his craft. A serious photographer needs a serious camera case. Camera case designers understand this and go to a great deal of trouble to design cases that meet the needs of the photographer.

A serious photographer may want to look for the following camera case accessories:

- Sturdy construction – Today’s offer so many different options for this. Choose a hard plastic case on wheels if you travel often with your equipment. A canvas case is ideal for toting equipment around town. Consider an equipment belt if you need to have a variety of different lenses at the ready. A fanny-pack of sorts, it makes it simple to grab that special lens for the action shot or to quickly change a battery. Just make sure the zippers don’t catch and that the pockets keep your lenses secure.

- Comfortable straps – This may seem like a given, but you may be surprised to learn that this is where many camera bag manufacturers scrimp. To really get an idea of how much a shoulder strap can improve your comfort, imagine holding your camera and all your accessories for hours. Then imagine a thin strap digging into your back. The image is not a pleasant one. Look for a strap that is made of thick foam or that includes a gel insert.

- Practicality – The best looking camera bag will quickly become redundant if it does not match your needs. Make sure all those inner pockets actually fit your lenses, and if you plan to travel often with your equipment, don’t forget to ask about the maximum load of the camera cases you are considering for purchase.

Price – Though not something you would immediately assume is an amenity, the price of camera cases definitely turns out to be one. After all, if you are able to navigate the world of camera cases to find one that meets your needs but is still affordable, you will have money left over to purchase that new stellar lens you’ve been eyeing. Choose wisely!
