News on the Sony phone and the PSP 2, Demon’s Souls 2 not being in development, a new loyalty incentive for Playstation users, the weekly PSN update and more!
Hello and welcome to B3yond the Report! For those who are new to the 411mania scene, you may think this is a new column, but it is not! This is the resurrection of the weekly Sony column. Basically, it is a recap of the most recent Sony news. Did you miss something in the world of Sony this week? Then I probably have you covered. Rejoice! Look out for a re-launched Nintendophiles soon as well!
Before I get started, a quick thank you to this column’s original author, Mark Salmela. He did a great job weekly with this column and is the main reason why I wanted to see it re-launched. I hope that the column can live up to the standard of quality he put-out. It might take a couple of weeks for me to find my feet and make this column awesome, but I’ll do my best to get it there dammit.
With that out of the way, let’s get this started!
PSP 2 to feature more RAM than the X-Box 360?
There is always something rumored when it comes to Sony handhelds. The PSP 2 was rumored for what feels like forever, but then word eked out on a Playstation Phone of sorts and so the PSP 2 was thrown aside. Well, the Playstation Phone was actually revealed in the middle of last week, so it’s time to turn our heads and look back to a familiar location! The PSP 2!
Before we talk about that though, some thoughts on the Playstation Phone. Pictures leaked of it over the weekend, allegedly, and it looks pretty interesting. It’s a phone that slides out to reveal a control pad exactly like one would see on a Playstation console. As Sony hasn’t confirmed anything, we don’t know what the phone plays exactly. Will they be treating it as an entirely new system? Will they unleash the PSP library on it? It is kind of frustrating to know that it exists, but not exactly know what it will be able to do.
That said, I actually am not sure this is such a wise move. As a gamer, I prefer this sort of gaming phone to something like an iPhone, because, well, it uses an actual controller. Call me crazy, but I don’t like using my fingers to obstruct my view of what is going on in the game. That said, will other people feel the same way? The Playstation Phone seems to pretty clearly be aimed at taking on the iPhone, but I feel people who play games on their iPhone generally don’t care about a more hardcore, hands-on experience. I could be wrong, but I don’t think the Playstation Phone would steal a ton of users away from the iPhone. It could attract some gamers who haven’t thought about purchasing a gaming phone before, but I’m not too sure how this will work out for Sony. I’d hate for them to go out and unleash another flop like the PSP Go.
Speaking of the PSP Go, let’s get to that PSP 2 stuff. According to Kotaku, at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony unveiled the PSP 2 to select members of the media. It apparently will feature two thumbsticks, an HD screen, a touch pad on the back that is similar to a mouse’s track pad and will sport 1 GB of RAM almost twice as much RAM as the X-Box 360 has at 512 MB. Apparently Sony wants the PSP 2 to not only be the next step up for the PSP, but to also blur the line between console and hand-held gaming.
Rumor has it, the PSP 2 will go the PSP Go route and abandon the UMDs. Really, who likes those things anyway? Good riddance. Sony apparently is fiddling with different ideas to replace the UMD, though some speculate that games will be held on the platform’s memory stick. I would be pretty surprised if Sony didn’t have some sort of physical media to place into the device. Didn’t several outlets say they wouldn’t sell the PSP Go because of its digital distribution leanings? Wasn’t the PSP Go a colossal failure? Why would they want to go back on that route? Obviously, nothing is final Kotaku said the design for the handheld isn’t final as they showed off two different versions of it but it will be interesting to see the route they decide to go with this.
I have been a pretty big detractor of the PSP. I felt that, compared to the DS at least, the PSP offered very little in terms of captivating content. I recently turned traitor on this idea, since six of the games I have purchased this year have been PSP titles. That said, it took several years for the PSP to become a handheld I found myself playing on a regular basis. I hope the PSP 2 is able to deliver captivating content soon upon release. It will pretty much have to It will be in direct competition with the highly anticipated 3DS. Well, as long as part of the launch strategy isn’t “it can play movies on this format you have no use for outside of this tiny little screen!” I imagine it will get off to a better start.
VG247 reports that the PSP 2 is currently slated for a late 2011 launch. The Nintendo 3DS is currently slated for a March 2011 release in North America, giving it quite the jump. I suppose one way of combating the promised 3D of the 3DS is to provide ridiculously impressive handheld graphics. I’ll be interested to see how next generation’s hand-held wars plays out, if this rumor turns out to be correct.

Christmas already ruined, Demon’s Souls 2 not currently in development
It’s November 1st, people are getting ready for the Holidays. Cheer is at record highs, people are contemplating being nice to each other and if you work in a department store, well, get ready for two straight months of Christmas music for 6+ hours daily. From Software decided to ruin the festive mood by announcing that Demon’s Souls 2 would not start development any time soon. This disputes the rumor that an official announcement for Demon’s Souls 2 was just around the corner. Talk of a sequel wasn’t immediately thrown out though.
In an interview with the Guardian, Demon’s Souls producer Takeshi Kaiji had the following to say:
“At the moment, my answer is ‘no sequel!’ I have been encouraged by all the players, and this title is so well supported, and besides we like this title so much… Well, this is my own feeling, but I think one day we can bring you another Demon’s Souls”
The first thing that leaps out at you is Kaiji saying right off the bat: “at the moment”. If you know “video game producer speak” like I, or any other person who spends far too much time on the internet does, this means that a sequel is planned and will probably be made at some point, but at this exact moment of time, it is not being made. With his initial wording, I would say that a sequel will probably happen at some point. His going even further and pretty much saying “Everyone likes it and I think one day it could happen.” Pretty much seals the deal.
Does Demon’s Souls need a sequel though? It’s a very difficult, yet unique game. Would it be possible to recreate the surprise glory of the original through a sequel? Honestly, parts of me want the team to work on a different title and branch out. After all, not every game in the world needs a sequel of some sort I’m looking at you Force Unleashed so why not end it at one? I suppose it could be Final Fantasy like in execution where Demon’s Souls 2 has nothing canonically in common with the original, but I would personally be interested in what the team can do elsewhere.
Then again, if Demon’s Souls does indeed get its sequel, I don’t think I would exactly complain
A reason not to cheat on your Playstation?
Club Nintendo is a pretty good idea. It rewards you for buying new Nintendo games you probably would have pirated
