Winnipeggers take to the streets to mark International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is observed around the world on March 8 and, to mark the occasion, approximately 200 Winnipeggers participated in a march held Sunday, March 7.
Before making their way through the city’s downtown streets, women, men and children gathered at the Legislature for a rally, some holding signs which reflected the theme of the day: “Break out! No one’s free until we’re all free!”
Several speakers read off a list of demands addressed to all levels of government. Among them were: raising the minimum wage to $10.66 per hour, establishing a national child-care program, introducing legislation on advertising practices to combat the hypersexualization and commodification of women’s bodies, decriminalizing sex work, prohibiting military recruitment in schools, changing CrimeStat, the city’s electronic crime-monitoring system, so that sexual assaults perpetuated by someone known to the victim (by far the most common type of sexual attack) are included in the information provided online, and responding to the unsolved cases of missing and murdered women (the mandate of the joint RCMP/Winnipeg Police Service task force created last August) in a way that is prompt, effective, accountable and transparent.
The latter demand was read by Bernadette Smith, whose sister, Claudette Osborne, disappeared on July 24, 2008; Osborne was last seen leaving the Lincoln Hotel on McPhillips Street and her case is among those being reviewed by the task force.
Winnipeg North MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis gave a rousing address to the crowd, which responded by repeatedly breaking into “Judy for mayor!” chants. She ended her speech with an unsourced quote: “Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders and says, ‘Oh shit – she’s awake.’”
The march’s departure from the Leg was delayed 45 minutes because the scheduled police escort did not show up when it was supposed to. Officers who had arrived on the scene would not permit the group to start walking until a third patrol car arrived, which prompted a short verbal confrontation with march organizers, filmed by members of local group Copwatch, before things finally got underway.
Don't worry he'll be back. When he decides to leave wrestling he'll have a HUGE send off like Flair. The won't let a legend like that get a short send off.

The highest court is the United States Supreme Court.
The intermediate level is the United States Court of Appeal. There are several of them spread around the country.
The lowest level is the United States District Court. There are many of them. This is the trial court.
